Assistant Manager – Tavern & Functions
Looking for a hospitality leadership role with greater work-life balance than a traditional venue environment?
The Curtin Student Guild is seeking an experienced and hands-on Assistant Manager - Tavern & Functions to support the operation of one of Perth's most unique hospitality venues. Based on the vibrant Curtin University campus, you'll play a key role in leading tavern operations, functions, catering services, student events and entertainment programs that contribute to an outstanding campus experience.

Competitive Salary
This position is offered under the Guild's Enterprise Collective Agreement at Level B5.1, with additional benefits and a supportive team culture.
About the Role
Reporting to the Tavern /Functions Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day leadership and operation of the Guild's hospitality services, including:
Day-to-day Tavern operations
Catering and functions services
Student-focused events and entertainment programs
Compliance, licensing and risk management
Staff leadership, training and supervision
Operational planning and continuous improvement
You will act as an Approved Manager during trading operations and may act in the capacity of the Tavern Manager when required. This is a genuine leadership role combining operational responsibility with hands-on involvement in service delivery and event execution.
Key Responsibilities
Support the day-to-day management of the Guild Tavern's bar, bistro and catering operations.
Lead the delivery of functions, events and promotions from planning through to execution.
Ensure compliance with liquor licensing, RSA, food safety and workplace health and safety requirements.
Assist with stock control, ordering, supplier management and inventory processes.
Support financial performance through labour cost management, reporting and operational efficiencies.
Supervise, coach and develop hospitality, bar and catering staff.
Build relationships with student clubs, societies, university stakeholders and external service providers.
Assist in delivering large-scale student events and entertainment programs.
Maintain exceptional customer service standards and a welcoming venue environment.
About You
To be successful, you will bring:
Experience in hospitality, venue, catering, events or functions management.
Strong leadership and team supervision skills.
Sound knowledge of liquor licensing, compliance and operational risk management.
Experience coordinating events, promotions or functions.
A current RSA and WA Unrestricted Approved Manager certification/card.
Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
A hands-on approach and willingness to assist with event setup, service delivery and pack-down when required.
The flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends to support key events and functions.
Highly Regarded
Catering and function management experience.
Experience working in a university, member-based or community-focused environment.
Food Safety Supervisor Certification or willing to obtain.
First Aid Certificate or willing to obtain.
Understanding of not-for-profit or values-based organisations.
