Formwork Carpenter / Construction All-Rounder | Eastern Suburbs Sydney

We’re Sydney Piling, a specialist piling and foundation construction company working predominantly around Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, and we’re looking for someone with a bit of formwork or carpentry experience to join our team.

This role is mainly about building capping beams. You’ll be working under our lead formworker, setting out, erecting shutters, installing formwork in position, helping organise steel fixers and getting the beams ready for concrete.

You do not need to be a senior formworker or someone who has run large formwork crews. What we need is someone who has been around formwork or carpentry for a couple of years, understands how things go together and can confidently build and install basic shutters, typically around 600mm high.

If you’ve got basic carpentry experience, have worked around concrete and can read a simple plan, use a laser level and work to RLs, you should be able to pick this up pretty quickly.

Steel fixing experience is helpful but not essential. Most of the steel work we do is straightforward, we use tie wire guns, and if there are simple cages that need making, we can teach you how we want them done. More complicated steel fixing is handled by dedicated steel fixers.

The role is a little broader than just formwork. From time to time you might also help with set-out, basic civil remediation, small concrete works, simple screeding, general foundation construction jobs or other bits and pieces that need doing on site.

So we’re looking for someone who is happy to pitch in and be useful, not someone who only wants to touch one type of work.

You should have:

• Some formwork or carpentry experience

• Confidence erecting and installing basic shutters

• Ability to use a laser level

• Basic understanding of RLs and set-out

• Basic plan-reading ability

• Driver’s licence

• Good communication

• Willingness to learn and take direction

• A good attitude and willingness to help the wider crew

You don’t need to know everything on day one.

We’ve already got a lead formworker who manages the crews and oversees the work. What we want is someone who can come in, work under that structure, become reliable in the role and gradually build up more responsibility.

We’re a tight-knit team and most of our work is around the Eastern Suburbs, usually on high-end residential and foundation projects.

The crews are relatively small, people know each other and we put a lot of value on having good people who are easy to work with.

Experience matters, but being reliable, respectful, willing to learn and able to get along with the team matters just as much.

There’s also room to progress. If you come in, get good at the work and want more responsibility, there are opportunities to become a stronger formworker, take on more set-out, manage small sections of work and eventually move towards leading crews.
