Inspector-General - Office of the Inspector-General of Aged Care

The Inspector-General of Aged Care Act 2023 sets out the Inspector-General’s functions and powers. The Inspector-General is appointed by the Governor-General and is responsible for overseeing the operation of the aged care system. The Inspector-General will be the Accountable Authority and Agency Head and is the senior leader of the OIGAC.

The Inspector-General will:

• manage OIGAC capability and performance;
• provide whole of agency leadership;
• establish the strategic direction of the OIGAC and publish an Annual Work Plan;
• lead the planning, development and implementation of the major functions of the OIGAC, including but not limited to Reviews, Monitoring and Reports of the aged care system; 
• be required to exercise the legislative powers and functions as set out in the Inspector-General of Aged Care Act 2023;
• develop and maintain effective working relationships and strategic partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders; and
• represent the OIGAC.

The Australian Government is seeking an executive leader experienced in strategic oversight, review and evaluation, and government and legislative processes.

To be a strong contender for this nationally important and challenging role, you will:

• have demonstrated you can operate independently in determining review and reporting priorities;
• be a leader who sets the standard for independence, integrity and performance, with a substantial record of achievement operating within a complex governance and regulatory framework;
• have extensive professional / executive management experience and a solid knowledge of public administration, government and parliamentary processes and protocols;
• have experience in exercising legislative powers and functions, or the ability to acquire it;
• have demonstrated your excellent strategic judgement and ability to deliver high-quality outcomes;
• have a focus on enabling and nurturing high-performing teams where people are supported to deliver and give their best. This includes setting expectations, uniting people behind a strategic vision, developing staff and building the capability of the organisation;
• be flexible and innovative in how you marshal internal and external resources;
• have first class communication skills and a personal style that engenders trust and respect;
• have demonstrated your ability to build and maintain positive relationships across industry, government and the community;
• be resilient, with a proven ability to maintain focus and take practical steps to resolve, prioritise and deliver results in complex matters; and
• have a strong understanding of the aged care system, or the ability to quickly acquire this understanding.

To be eligible for employment, applicants must be an Australian citizen at the time an offer of employment is made. 

An applicant’s suitability for employment will also be assessed through a variety of pre-employment check processes, such as: 

• Satisfactory completion of a criminal history check, and where relevant, a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Check, 
• Completion of a medical declaration and pre-employment medical (where required), 
• Providing evidence of qualifications (where required), and 
• Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance at the required level. For this role applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance. 

Please note this role is non-ongoing with a 5-year appointment.
