Family Support Worker (Identified)

Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council (OLALC) is seeking a passionate and compassionate Family Support Worker to join our Mirganha Program in Bathurst.

The Mirganha Program recognises the impact of current, past and intergenerational trauma and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to strengthen wellbeing, connection to culture and community, and build positive pathways forward.

Identified Position

This is an Identified position and is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, Australia’s First Nations people.

Where a position is identified, an applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification authorised by Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

Applicants must provide one of the following with their application to confirm Aboriginality:

• A Confirmation of Aboriginality form; OR

• Written confirmation from 1–2 Aboriginal organisations within the community in which you live or work confirming that the applicant:

  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;

  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and

  • is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

About the Role

As a Family Support Worker, you will work directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, providing culturally safe, trauma-informed support and practical assistance.

You will build trusting relationships, walk alongside families through challenges, connect them with services and support them to strengthen family wellbeing, cultural connection, confidence and independence.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide culturally safe case management and family support

• Build strong, respectful and trusting relationships with families and community

• Support families with safety planning, referrals and access to appropriate services

• Assist families to identify their strengths, goals and pathways forward

• Facilitate peer support groups, wellbeing activities and family-focused programs

• Support connection to culture, community and relevant services

• Maintain accurate case notes, case plans and client records

• Work collaboratively with internal and external service providers

• Participate in case conferencing, team meetings and program activities

• Contribute to program planning, evaluation and continuous improvement

About You

We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and who brings a genuine, respectful and strengths-based approach to their work.

You will have:

• A qualification in Community Services, Social Work, Family Support or a related field, or relevant experience

• Experience in case management, family support or community services

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills

• An understanding of trauma and the impacts of intergenerational trauma

• An understanding of the experiences and challenges affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families

• The ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with families, community and service providers

• Strong organisational, documentation and time-management skills

• A proactive, compassionate and community-focused approach

• A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families

Essential Requirements

• Working with Children Check

• National Criminal Record Check

• Current C Class Driver’s License

• Confirmation of Aboriginality as outlined above
