About Racing Analytical Services Ltd
Racing Analytical Services Ltd (RASL) is a not-for-profit company set up by the Victorian Racing Industry (VRI) and the State Government of Victoria in 1988. RASL operates a drug testing laboratory which specialises in the detection of drugs and related substances for the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing industries in Victoria, as well as for interstate and overseas clients. In addition, RASL provides human drug testing services and provides a certification process for sports supplements.
About this position
RASL is currently seeking to employ a Senior Biochemist/Senior Research Chemist, to become part of our Biological Research Unit (BRU).
As a Senior Biochemist, you will be responsible for:
Performing confirmation analyses for rhEPO in racing samples
Preparing urine and plasma samples for rhEPO confirmation;
Operating LCMS instruments for rhEPO confirmation;
Preparing data reports for rhEPO analysis; and
Overseeing the rhEPO and IGF-1 immunoassay screening program.
Conducting research into novel biological therapeutics and new forms of sports doping
Monitoring the development of new protein-based drugs and conducting research on methods for their detection; and
Monitoring the use and development of genetic testing methods and assessing their relevance for the racing industry.
Identifying biological drugs / proteins in miscellaneous seized materials
Analysing vials, syringes and other miscellaneous submissions for identification of macromolecule drugs, proteins and novel compounds.
Performing maintenance on laboratory equipment
Assisting with the maintenance of laboratory equipment in the BRU and recommending specific equipment needs for the on-going, efficient functioning of the unit.
Background, skills and experience
In order to be considered for this position, you will have:
A science degree majoring in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline (minimum)
A minimum of four years’ laboratory experience in analytical science
Strong method development and validation experience in Bioanalytical analysis, such as LCMS, IEF, SDS-PAGE, Electrophoresis, Immunoaffinity extraction methods, Western Blotting, protein sequencing and related techniques is desirable
Good organisation and time management skills
Demonstrated innovative thinking skills
Attention to detail
Strong written & spoken communication skills
Strong problem-solving skills
High level of computer literacy
Experience in data analysis including python and/or R programming
