About the role
GENERAL MANAGER – AUSTRAL ALLERGY
Healthcare Start-Up | National Growth & Demerger
Canberra, Melbourne or Adelaide based | National travel
Build and scale Australia’s next national allergy care network.
Austral Allergy is a clinician-led healthcare start-up established to make timely, evidence-based and high-quality allergy care accessible to more Australians.
We currently operate two clinics—Canberra Allergy and Adelaide Allergy—and have an ambitious plan to develop a national network of 15+ clinics over the next five years.
With the clinical model established and national expansion underway with South East Melbourne and Ballina as our next practices on the roadmap, we are seeking an accomplished General Manager to build the business, lead its transition to standalone operations and turn its growth strategy into operating reality.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting directly to the CEO and Founder, Dr Chris McCue, the General Manager will hold single-point accountability for executing the Austral Allergy business plan.
The CEO will continue to set strategy and lead the clinical, shareholder and key external relationships. The General Manager will run the company day to day—leading its operating performance, expansion program, workforce growth, financial management and corporate capability.
This is not a role for someone who wants to inherit a finished operating model.
It is an opportunity for a commercially strong and hands-on executive who enjoys building systems, solving problems, making decisions and creating the organisational capability required to scale.
You will have meaningful decision-making authority, direct exposure to the Board and the opportunity to shape a nationally significant healthcare business from an early stage.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
Business performance
Full accountability for network operating performance, P&L, cash flow and delivery against the approved business plan
Performance of each clinic, supported by consistent KPIs, financial reporting and corrective action
Clear and timely monthly operating, financial and risk reporting to the Board
Disciplined management of costs, working capital and investment during the growth phase
National growth
Delivery of the multi-site clinic opening program on time, on budget and to the agreed operating model
Market assessment, business cases, property negotiations and fit-out oversight
Development of a scalable operating platform that maintains clinical quality and patient experience as the network grows
Capturing and applying lessons from each clinic opening to strengthen future implementation
Clinical workforce and training
Delivery of the doctor workforce plan across existing and new locations
Attraction, onboarding and retention of doctors and other critical team members
Alignment of recruitment growth with available training, supervision and assessment capacity
Development of a sustainable clinical workforce pipeline to support national expansion
Financial and commercial management
Active management of P&L, cash flow, working capital, capital expenditure and funding requirements
Oversight of billing performance, clinician utilisation, pricing and operational yield
Management of grants, tenders, commercial contracts and external service providers
Financial discipline to ensure the business grows at a sustainable and appropriately sequenced pace
Quality and governance
Partnering with Clinical Director to ensure clinical governance is appropriately resourced and operationalised
Supporting consistent, credentialing, incident management, cold-chain, quality and safety systems across every clinic
Ensuring material clinical, operational and corporate risks are identified, mitigated and escalated appropriately
Building the reporting, systems and governance expected of a mature national healthcare organisation
People and leadership
Building and leading a capable, accountable and commercially focused management team
Developing a strong pipeline of Practice Managers and operational leaders
Creating a performance culture that balances pace, accountability, clinical quality and patient care
Establishing the organisational structure and capability required at each stage of growth
A DEFINING 2026 PRIORITY: TRANSITION
One of the General Manager’s first and most important priorities will be leading Austral Allergy’s transition away from a larger parent company over the remaining months of 2026.
You will establish the independent corporate and operating capability Austral Allergy needs for its next stage of growth, including:
Developing and executing the end-to-end transition plan
Establishing standalone finance, payroll, HR, IT, legal, insurance, property and governance arrangements
Determining which capabilities should be built internally and which should be commercially outsourced
Protecting business continuity, clinical operations, payroll, financial reporting and organisational records throughout the transition
Delivering the transition within the approved corporate services budget
Providing clear progress, risk and decision reporting to the CEO and Board
The successful candidate will combine strong project and change leadership with the commercial judgement required to build a fit-for-purpose corporate platform without overbuilding ahead of revenue.
ABOUT YOU
You are an experienced executive who can move comfortably between strategy, operations, financial performance and hands-on delivery.
You understand that leadership in a start-up and scale-up environment means making decisions with imperfect information, managing competing priorities and personally stepping into critical work when required.
You will bring:
Strong general management experience in a multi-site healthcare, medical or similarly regulated service organisation
Full P&L accountability within an organisation of approximately $10 million or greater revenue
Demonstrated delivery of new site openings, business expansion or comparable growth programs
Experience leading a transition, corporate separation, business stand-up, integration or major operating-model transformation
Strong command of P&L, cash flow, working capital, capital expenditure, funding and reforecasting
Demonstrated success attracting, contracting and retaining doctors or another scarce professional workforce
Experience building, leading and holding accountable a management team
Sound understanding of governance, accreditation and healthcare risk
The ability to communicate with Boards and shareholders clearly, directly and without spin
Strong judgement developed through leading growth or transformation under financial and operational constraints
A willingness to remain close to execution while developing the systems and team needed to scale
Experience in private healthcare, outpatient services, medical training, institutional investment, healthcare tenders will be highly regarded.
WHY JOIN AUSTRAL ALLERGY?
This is a rare opportunity to take a clinician-led healthcare start-up with two operating clinics and build it into a national organisation.
You will have:
Genuine authority to run and shape the business
Direct access to the CEO, clinical leaders, Board and shareholders
An established clinical model and a clear national expansion strategy
The opportunity to build the systems, team, capability and culture required for scale
A role with measurable impact on access to specialist allergy care
A base salary of $200,000 plus superannuation
A short-term incentive opportunity of up to $60,000 per annum, subject to the applicable incentive plan
The opportunity to receive options to purchase equity and invest in the business you grow
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit your CV and a covering letter outlining how you meet the criteria.
If you are a commercially disciplined, hands-on operator who wants to build and scale a purpose-led national healthcare business, we would welcome your application.
