Access programs Convenor

The National Gallery is committed to making art accessible, meaningful and engaging for diverse audiences. The Gallery provides free access programs and resources that support individuals, carers and community groups to experience and engage with the Gallery’s exhibitions and collections.

The Access Programs Convenor leads the development and delivery of programs and resources that actively support access and inclusion - at the Gallery, online and through outreach initiatives. Programs include Art and Dementia, Art by Description, Art for Wellbeing, Art with Auslan, as well as sensory friendly programming. The Access Programs Convenor works collaboratively with consultants with lived-experience, Artist Educators and volunteers to develop meaningful programs and resources informed by the National Gallery’s Creative Learning Approach.

The Access Programs Convenor contributes to access and inclusion initiatives across the Gallery and has a leadership role within the Learning Team, working collaboratively with colleagues to embed access and inclusion in all Gallery programs.

The Access Programs Convenor works closely with First Nations colleagues across the National Gallery to elevate the voices of First Nations artists and build knowledge and understanding of First Nations arts practices, cultures and perspectives.

The Access Programs Convenor is responsible for all aspects of program delivery including: project timelines; program consultation and development; artist and speaker management; risk management processes; ticketing; website communication; budgets; collaboration with and supervision of casual and contracted event staff and volunteers. This role is also responsible for program evaluation including feedback processes, monitoring of engagement and reporting requirements. The Access Programs Convenor works closely with colleagues in Marketing and Communications to promote events and build audiences.

After hours and weekend work is required on occasions. Weekend penalties or time off in lieu will apply.

This position reports to the Digital Learning, Access and Outreach Manager. The Access Programs Convenor position is an ongoing, full-time role within the Learning Team.

In accordance with the APS NGA 6 work level standards, you will have the following key responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver accessible and inclusive programs and resources for a range of audiences with disabilities, lived-experience and access requirements.
• Collaborate with artists, curators, artist educators, consultants, program convenors, content producers, program partners, communities and volunteers in the development and delivery of programs.
• Undertake all aspects of program delivery, including: project timelines; artist and speaker management; risk management processes; ticketing; website communication; and budgets.
• Research, write and produce content for online resources.
• Supervise casual event staff, consultants and volunteers.
• Support key stakeholder relationships with external program partners and community networks, locally and nationally.
• Undertake evaluation and participate in research that contributes to deeper understanding of audience needs, contemporary best practice in access programming, and the impact and effectiveness of public programs.
• Provide leadership and mentoring for colleagues within the Learning Team, to embed access and inclusion in all Gallery programs.
• Contribute to Gallery-wide access initiatives to increase accessibility and support organisational capacity building.
• Work collaboratively as part of the Learning team and contribute to a culture of reflective practice.
