About the opportunity

University of Tasmania's Health is seeking an Animal Services Coordinator to oversee the operations of its animal research facilities at the Medical Science Precinct in Hobart and the Cambridge Farm Facility.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring high standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across the University's animal services. These PC2 facilities support a diverse range of medical and health research programs, providing essential services that enable high-quality, ethical research.

You will lead a team of animal technicians and support staff, coordinate breeding programs, oversee animal welfare monitoring and assessments, and maintain accurate genetic and colony records.

This is a shiftwork position requiring regular work outside standard business hours, including weekends and public holidays, as well as participation in an on-call roster for Animal Services.

What you’ll do:

• Manage and work alongside a team of staff to coordinate the effective operation of animal research facilities.
• Lead and promote high standards of animal welfare, ensuring compliance with ethical frameworks, legislative requirements, approved protocols, and industry best practice.
• Oversee and optimise breeding programs for genetically modified and conventional rodent colonies.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver comprehensive training and induction programs in animal handling, husbandry, and research procedures.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives across animal services operations, identifying and implementing best practices that enhance animal care, service quality, operational efficiency.

­What we’re looking for:

•  A degree with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
• Demonstrated knowledge of animal welfare principles, ethical requirements, workplace health and safety obligations, and regulatory standards.
• Proven experience managing conventional and genetically modified rodent colonies, including breeding program coordination, complex genetics, and genotype tracking.
• Demonstrated experience supervising staff within an animal research facility, laboratory, or similar environment including work allocation and performance management.
• Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering staff training and induction programs, and a track record of identifying and implementing continuous improvement initiatives within animal services operations.
• Highly developed communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building skills,
• Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and monitoring risk assessments, safe work practices, standard operating procedures, and biosecurity controls.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $130,943 comprising base salary within the range of $101,821 to $111,917 plus 17% superannuation.
