Assistant Accountant
Finance Team | Illawarra Region | Full-time
We are seeking a capable, detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys accurate, process-driven work, takes ownership of deadlines, and is looking to build strong technical accounting skills in a supportive and practical environment.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will support and assist with the supervision of key finance functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, asset register, import payments, general ledger, invoice finance facility and stock levels of imported goods. You will also support month-end finance duties, reconciliations, compliance reporting, continuous process improvements, budgets, payroll tax, audit requirements and general finance administration.
About the Role
As Assistant Accountant, you will play a hands-on role in maintaining accurate finance operations while supporting supervision, reporting and administration across the finance team. The role requires strong attention to detail, a natural flair for numbers, a proactive work ethic and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

Complete bank reconciliations including corporate cards and assist with debtor and creditor ageing analysis.
Support accounts payable and receivable processes, including invoice processing, supplier queries, payment runs and debtor follow-up where required.
Prepare and maintain workpapers for BAS, IAS, GST, PAYG and other compliance requirements.
Maintain the fixed asset register, including additions, disposals and depreciation support.
Support the preparation of company budgets, including profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow forecasts. Assist with monthly reporting, variance analysis and preparation of management reporting packs.
Provide audit support by preparing schedules, reconciliations and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to process improvements, documentation and system efficiencies across the finance function.
Provide ad hoc finance, reporting and administrative support as required.
About You
You are a reliable and detail-oriented finance professional who works well in a structured environment, communicates openly and builds positive relationships across the business. You are patient and tactful under pressure, willing to learn, and comfortable balancing supervised and unsupervised work while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
What You’ll Bring
A qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or Business, or currently undertaking study in one of these fields.
At least 3 years’ experience in a Junior Accountant, Assistant Accountant, Accounts Officer or similar finance role in Australia.
Strong understanding of reconciliations, journals, month-end processes and basic accounting principles.
A natural flair for numbers and strong attention to detail.
Experience in administration, accounts and data entry.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
Ability to multi-task, prioritise duties and work accurately in a busy environment.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate professionally with peers, managers, employees and external parties.
A can-do attitude, proactive work ethic and willingness to learn and develop professionally.
Ability to work effectively both with supervision and independently.
Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
Ability to pass comprehensive medical and drug/alcohol assessments.
Experience in manufacturing, knowledge of bathroom furniture or proficiency in MYOB Exonet would be highly regarded.
What’s in it for You?
Permanent full-time opportunity within a supportive and collaborative finance team.
Broad exposure across accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, imports, stock, general ledger, reporting, compliance and payroll support.
Opportunity to develop technical accounting, budgeting, reporting and stakeholder management skills.
Hands-on experience in a practical business environment with exposure to senior managers and external stakeholders.
Career development pathway within a stable organisation that values accuracy, teamwork, safety and continuous improvement.
Onsite parking and practical workplace support.
Competitive salary package based on skills and experience.
