Own the plan the whole site runs on
Our client is an established Australian manufacturer, part of a larger national group, that has spent decades building a reputation for steel products that turn up right and turn up on time. From a large facility in Brisbane’s southern industrial belt they manufacture in house and distribute nationally from their own warehouse.
It’s a hands-on, down-to-earth business of forty to fifty people. Nobody hides behind a job title, and the people who do well there are the ones who go and find out rather than wait to be told.
The role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, you’ll own the production plan and the Bills of Materials that sit behind it. When a job is at risk, a part number is wrong or the stock on the system doesn’t match the stock in the yard, you’re the person who sorts it out.
Production planning is the heart of it. BOMs and part data come next. After that it’s coordinating outside processing and labour hire so the plan actually holds. Inventory, purchasing and interstate distribution sit around those, and quality and safety are yours to grow into rather than yours on day one.
Day to day you will:
- Build and maintain the weekly production schedule, prepare and sequence job cards, and work with supervisors on priorities and overdue jobs
- Act on the daily production report — chase the variances rather than file them
- Create and maintain BOMs across the product range, update standard costs for price changes, and keep part data clean in the ERP
- Coordinate galvanising, powder coating, passivating and laser cutting around the schedule, including turnaround, rework and credits
- Scale labour hire up and down against what production and dispatch actually need
- Run cycle counts and stocktakes, and investigate variances properly so the same one doesn’t come back
- Raise purchase orders, confirm receipting and reconcile creditor invoices
- Coordinate interstate orders and project supply, and chase down anything that misses
- Support site quality and chair the onsite safety committee — with training and support to get there
About you
You’re coordinating or planning production somewhere now, in a business that makes things to order. Specifically:
- You own or co-own a weekly production schedule. Not "I help the planner" — you make the calls
- You’ve built and corrected Bills of Materials, not just read them. Standard costing exposure is a real plus
- You’ve worked in manufacturing — steel, sheet metal, metal products, building products or a job shop. Make-to-order rather than high-volume process
- You’re comfortable in a manufacturing ERP. Which one matters far less than how quickly you got productive in it
- You can read a drawing well enough to query a part rather than pass it along
- You’ll walk out onto the floor and into the yard, and the supervisors will take you seriously when you get there
- You get on with it. This role has been vacant for a short while, so there’s no one to hand over to you — the person who suits it is the one who’d rather work that out themselves
Quality systems experience and formal qualifications are welcome but neither is essential. If you can plan production and you know your way around a BOM, our client is open on where you’ve come from.
