Cultural Practice Advisor (Identified role)

About the Role:

Based in either Ipswich, Toowoomba or Bundaberg, the Cultural Practice Advisor will work collaboratively across DCC Industry Group to maximise outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This role will be integral in providing advice and guidance in the planning, development and implementation of policies, strategies, programs, and services to support culturally secure and responsive support.

The Cultural Practice Advisor will draw on personal experience and knowledge of traditions and customs to provide culturally appropriate services. This individual will use cultural expertise and knowledge to foster respectful relationships with communities and contribute to growing the organisation’s cultural capability.

Responsibilities will include:

• Advise on improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural governance and community engagement across the group.

• Provide cultural advice and leadership to ensure services and decisions are respectful and safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• Support and train staff to build cultural understanding, skills, and confidence, and promote continuous learning and workforce cultural capability through sharing knowledge of culturally significant practices.

• Work with communities, peak bodies, and partners to improve services and strengthen engagement.

• Support children and young people by helping them stay connected to family, community, and culture, and by advocating for their needs.

• Engage with children, young people, and stakeholders to support cultural needs and care plan goals.

• Contribute to team discussions, reporting, and other organisational tasks as required.

• Collaborate with the Marketing Department on marketing and campaign efforts, create resources and engage with networks to support service delivery.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Tertiary qualification in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology or Social Science or relevant field is desirable

• Extensive knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and practices

• Capacity to assess and manage risk, problem solve and negotiate successful outcomes in challenging circumstances

• Proven ability to build relationships and strategic partnerships with government, non-government and community partners

• Exceptional interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively and sensitively with a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences

• Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team

• Ability to travel to DCC sites

• Working with Children Check (QLD Paid Blue Card)

• NDIS Worker Screening Check (Yellow Card)

• Able to pass a police check

• First Aid and CPR Certificates

• Satisfactory LCS (Child Safety) Check outcome

• Valid Australian Driver's licence

Cultural Consideration

For this position, applicants must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander , in recognition of the vital importance of cultural knowledge, lived experience, and community connection in foster care delivery. This is a genuine occupational requirement under Section 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld). Non-Indigenous applicants may be considered in subsequent recruitment rounds if no suitable Indigenous candidates are identified initially.
