Disability Support Worker

We are seeking a reliable, compassionate and person-centred Support Worker with basic Auslan skills to support NDIS participants across the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region.

Please note: Auslan means Australian Sign Language. It is a recognised visual language used by the Australian Deaf community. Auslan is not body language, gestures, facial expressions or the ability to interpret someone's non-verbal behaviour. Applicants must have an existing basic ability to communicate using Australian Sign Language and be willing to undertake further formal Auslan training and certification.

You will provide one-on-one support in participants' homes and in the community, with a strong focus on communication, independence, choice and meaningful community participation.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one support in accordance with individual NDIS support plans

• Communicate directly with participants using Australian Sign Language (Auslan)

• Support participants with daily living activities and meal preparation

• Assist with community access, appointments, shopping and social activities

• Drive participants to activities and appointments where required

• Encourage independence, choice, dignity and skill development

• Maintain professional boundaries and provide respectful, person-centred support

• Complete accurate shift notes and required documentation at the end of each shift

• Follow organisational policies, participant support plans and management instructions

Hours and Availability

• Approximately 8–16 hours per week, with opportunities for additional hours as the role develops

• Weekday availability is highly desirable

• Some weekend availability is required, including potential shifts such as:

  • Saturday: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

  • Sunday: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

• No public holiday work

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

• Have at least a basic ability to communicate using Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

• Understand that Auslan is a formal sign language and is not the same as reading body language, gestures or non-verbal cues

• Be willing to undertake further formal Auslan training and certification

• Hold a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) or be willing to obtain this qualification

• Hold or be willing to obtain a current First Aid and CPR certificate

• Hold or be willing to obtain an NDIS Worker Screening Check

• Hold a current Blue Card / Working with Children Check where required

• Hold a valid Australian Driver's Licence

• Have access to a reliable vehicle with comprehensive insurance

• Have full Australian working rights

• Be reliable, professional and able to work independently with participants

Desirable

• Previous experience supporting Deaf or hard-of-hearing people

• Understanding of Deaf culture and communication needs

• Previous experience working with NDIS participants

• Certificate IV in Disability Support or another relevant qualification

• Previous experience providing community access or in-home support

Basic Auslan ability is an essential requirement for this position. Applicants who do not currently know basic Australian Sign Language will not be suitable for this role.
