About the role
Job description
Allygroup is seeking an experienced Senior Lawyer (EL1-equivalent) to support a high-performing legal team providing advice on complex regulatory, administrative law, and legislative matters. This opportunity offers the chance to work on significant regulatory frameworks and legislative issues, providing strategic legal advice to support decision-making and regulatory outcomes. The successful candidate will work closely with legal and business stakeholders, contributing to the development and interpretation of legislation and regulatory policy.
This engagement is offered for an initial six-month term, commencing in September 2026 and continuing through to March 2027. Canberra-based candidates are preferred. However, other arrangements will be considered for suitably qualified candidates.
Due to the nature of the work, a current Baseline security clearance is mandatory.
Key responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
Providing legal advice on regulatory frameworks, legislative interpretation, and administrative law matters
Advising on lawful decision-making and supporting regulatory outcomes
Delivering practical, client-focused legal advice within short timeframes, including on complex legal issues
Supporting the development, amendment, and implementation of primary and subordinate legislation
Preparing legal analysis, briefing materials, explanatory documents, and related advice products
Providing advice on parliamentary processes and legislative requirements
Supporting responses to parliamentary scrutiny and related legislative processes
Working collaboratively with legal, policy, operational, and technical stakeholders
Contributing to effective risk management and governance practices
Maintaining high-quality legal records and knowledge management practices
Our ideal candidate
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
EL1-equivalent capability with a minimum of four years post-admission experience
Strong experience providing advice on administrative law matters, particularly lawful decision-making
Experience advising on regulatory frameworks and statutory obligations
The ability to deliver high-quality legal advice within tight timeframes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts in a practical and accessible manner
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills
Highly regarded
Experience supporting the development of legislation, regulations, and associated explanatory materials
Familiarity with legislative drafting processes and parliamentary procedures
Experience responding to parliamentary committee scrutiny or related review processes
Previous experience working within Australian Government or other public sector legal environments
Knowledge of government legal services frameworks and governance requirements
