About Us

Greater Western Aboriginal Health Service (GWAHS) is seeking passionate and community-focused Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Aboriginal Health Workers to join our Clinical Teams across our Mount Druitt, Penrith and Katoomba clinics.

We are ideally seeking qualified Aboriginal Health Practitioners with current AHPRA registration. We also strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal Health Workers who are working towards becoming an Aboriginal Health Practitioner and obtaining AHPRA registration.

About the Role

Working as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team, you will support the delivery of culturally safe, accessible and high-quality primary health care.

Depending on your qualifications, registration and scope of practice, the role may include direct clinical care, health assessments, care planning, client follow-up, referrals, health promotion and supporting clients to navigate health and community services.

Aboriginal Health Practitioners will undertake clinical duties within their qualifications, AHPRA registration and scope of practice.

Aboriginal Health Workers will work under the supervision and guidance of an Aboriginal Health Practitioner and the broader clinical team, with opportunities to continue developing their clinical skills and progress towards Aboriginal Health Practitioner qualification and registration.

Key Responsibilities

• Build strong, culturally safe relationships with Aboriginal clients, families and communities.
• Support client engagement, health screening, follow-up, recalls, referrals and ongoing care coordination.
• Assist with or undertake primary health care activities in accordance with qualifications, registration and scope of practice.
• Work alongside GPs, nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, allied health professionals and other members of the clinical team.
• Support the delivery and follow-up of health assessments, care plans, preventive health and chronic disease management activities.
• Provide culturally appropriate health education and promote healthy lifestyles and preventive health.
• Support clients to access allied health, specialist, hospital and community services.
• Participate in community engagement, outreach and health promotion activities.
• Maintain accurate and timely client documentation and contribute to quality improvement activities.
• Work flexibly across GWAHS clinics, outreach services and programs where required.

Essential Criteria

We are looking for someone who has a genuine commitment to Aboriginal health and understands the importance of culturally safe, community-controlled health care.

You will have:

• Aboriginality.
• A Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice) and current AHPRA registration as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner; or working towards
• Strong communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with local Aboriginal people, families and communities.
• Knowledge and understanding of health and social issues impacting Aboriginal people and communities.
• The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team.
• An understanding of professional boundaries, confidentiality and working within your qualifications, competence and scope of practice.
• A willingness to undertake ongoing professional development and training.
• Current NSW Driver Licence
• Current Working with Children Check
• National Police Check

Desirable

• Previous experience in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO)
• Experience using Best Practice and Medicare billing systems
