We are seeking an exceptional leader to become the League’s inaugural General Manager and help shape the future of one of Victoria’s most respected regional football and netball competitions.

The Goulburn Valley League is one of Victoria’s premier regional football and netball competitions, bringing together community clubs, volunteers, players, officials, sponsors and supporters across the region. 

With a proud history and a strong community footprint, the League is focused on building a sustainable, professional and community-focused future for football and netball across the Goulburn Valley.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the GVL Board, the General Manager will be responsible for the overall leadership, business management and strategic delivery of the League.

Working closely with clubs, AFL Victoria, sponsors, government stakeholders and the broader community, you will oversee governance, financial performance, commercial partnerships, league operations and stakeholder engagement to ensure the ongoing success and growth of the GVL. 

Key responsibilities will include:

• Leading the business operations of the League and delivering the Board’s strategic direction. 

• Managing budgets, financial reporting, invoicing, grants, funding applications and financial governance. 

• Developing sponsorship, commercial partnerships and revenue growth opportunities. 

• Building strong relationships with clubs, presidents, committees, volunteers, AFL Victoria, local government and community stakeholders. 

• Supporting league employees, contractors and volunteers while building a professional, service-oriented culture.

• Overseeing league events, presentations, finals activities, media and official communications.

• Protecting and enhancing the GVL brand and reputation. 

• Ensuring strong governance, risk management, compliance, integrity and child safety practices.

About You

You are a motivated, credible and community-minded leader who can balance strategic thinking with practical delivery. You will bring strong judgement, commercial discipline and the ability to work confidently with a Board, clubs, volunteers, partners and key stakeholders.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Experience in senior leadership, business management, sports administration or a similar role.

• Strong financial and commercial acumen.

• Experience developing partnerships, sponsorships or other commercial opportunities. 

• Outstanding relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.

• High-level communication, negotiation and presentation skills. 

• Proven ability to work with Boards, committees and volunteers. 

• Strong organisational and project management capabilities. 

• Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends. 

Experience in community sport, football, netball or not-for-profit organisations will be highly regarded, along with an understanding of governance and compliance obligations within sporting organisations and knowledge of AFL Victoria and community sport structures.
