Role Overview:We are seeking an experienced Principal Java/Bespoke Software Engineer (Developer) to support the delivery, enhancement and ongoing maintenance of a mission-critical enterprise application within a Tier 1 Commonwealth Government agency.
Working as part of a highly skilled development team, you will contribute to the design, development, integration and support of complex Java-based backend services and cloud solutions that support nationally significant operational capabilities.
You will play a key role in designing enterprise-grade software, developing secure and scalable APIs, implementing robust data integration solutions, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation. The role also involves collaborating closely with architects, developers, business stakeholders and operational support teams to deliver reliable and maintainable software solutions.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex, business-critical systems using modern Java technologies, cloud platforms and DevOps practices while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and software engineering excellence.
What We’re Looking For:Demonstrated experience developing enterprise Java applications in complex ICT environments.Extensive experience with Java, Spring Boot, Spring Framework and enterprise design patterns.Strong knowledge of REST APIs, SOAP Web Services, OpenAPI, XML, JSON and related integration technologies.Experience with Java EE, JPA, Hibernate ORM and reactive programming (desirable).Strong Oracle database development skills including SQL, PL/SQL, data modelling and stored procedures.Experience developing cloud-native applications using AWS services such as EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS and CloudFormation.Experience using Git, Maven, Jenkins and modern DevOps practices.Experience developing and maintaining automated testing frameworks.Experience working in Linux/Unix environments with Bash scripting.Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, secure coding principles and system integration.Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce technical documentation and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.Experience working within Agile software delivery teams.Ability to work independently while contributing positively within a collaborative development environment.Willingness to participate in an on-call production support roster.
