ABOUT THIS ROLE

As an Advisor in the Social Security team at Basic Rights Queensland, you provide advice and support under the direction of a Managing Lawyer. You contribute your expertise to individual matters and help ensure quality service delivery. Your work focuses on client service, advice and individual advocacy, research, and casework support to deliver outcomes for individual clients. You contribute to:

• Direct client work - delivering quality and inclusive services that have a meaningful impact and are responsive to client/community need
• Practice supervision - overseeing processes and practices that comply with funding, accreditation and risk management requirements, and leading a team that lives our values, focuses on performance, and has impact
• Community/organisation - engaging with the community to leverage and amplify our impact, while supporting operational, administrative and sustainable practices

This is a one-year fixed-term contract position. Full-time preferred, though part-time and other flexible arrangements may be considered.

ABOUT YOU

• You are compassionate and client-focused, with a strong commitment to social justice principles, including an understanding of the issues and concerns for people accessing social security payments
• You have experience delivering timely and efficient advice, support, advocacy and resources to clients to address their issues and to work towards practical, client-centred outcomes
• You are able to explain rights, obligations, and entitlements clearly and accurately, translating complex information into accessible, easy to understand advice
• Your communication and interpersonal skills are excellent, with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong and cooperative relationships, including liaising with agencies and other service providers
• You have demonstrated experience recording client data accurately, maintaining high quality advice notes and case work records
• Sound knowledge of Centrelink and social security matters is desirable, but not essential

TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE, YOU NEED:

• Tertiary qualifications in Law, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Business or similar, or equivalent relevant experience
• Practical experience in legal, industrial, or advocacy work related to social security, disability discrimination, and/or employment law
• Ability to contribute to legal research, case preparation and service delivery improvement initiatives
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships
