Director Operations

The Opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to join the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB) in one of two newly created senior leadership positions that sit at the heart of our organisation.

As Director Operations, you will lead the delivery of funeral, burial, cremation and cemetery services across our cemeteries and memorial parks, ensuring families can honour and celebrate the lives of their loved ones with dignity, care and respect.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role provides both strategic and operational leadership across a large, geographically dispersed workforce. You will lead through a team of Operations Managers and specialist coordinators, driving service excellence, workforce capability, operational performance, safety, compliance and continuous improvement across all sites.

You will champion innovation and continuous improvement, strengthen workforce capability, and foster a culture where safety, respect and customer service are at the centre of everything we do.

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Lead the delivery of funeral, burial, cremation and cemetery services across multiple sites.
• Lead and develop a large, geographically dispersed workforce, driving performance, capability and engagement.
• Lead operational governance, risk management and assurance activities, ensuring compliance, effective controls and organisational resilience.
• Embed a proactive culture of workplace health, safety and wellbeing across all sites.
• Strengthen organisational capability and foster cross-functional collaboration to meet the needs of the community.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have as a minimum:

• Extensive experience leading large, multi-site operational teams.
• Proven success in strategic planning, financial management and resource allocation, with accountability for operational performance.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop others, build workforce capability and foster a high-performing, safe and positive workplace culture.
• Strong expertise in governance, risk management, workplace health and safety, and regulatory compliance within a complex operational environment.
• Well-developed stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across diverse groups.
