Primary objective
Reporting to the Director Guardianship, manage a multi-disciplinary team to deliver an integrated high-quality service within a
human rights framework and to carry out structured decision making for adults with impaired decision-making capacity.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership to ensure that guardianship services and health care decision making are delivered in accordance with
legislative requirements.
2. Implement and monitor quality improvement activities that promote national best practice models, program policies and
standard operating procedures.
3. Manage and supervise complex client caseloads of the Adult Guardianship Officer team and the Health team within the
legislative frameworks, taking into account the complexities and ethical considerations relating to advocacy and substitute
decision making.
4. Ensure adherence of team members to statutory requirements and Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) guidelines
to facilitate consistent and high quality responses.
5. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with key local stakeholders and represent the Public Guardian.
6. Actively participate in the guardianship management team by contributing to developing protocols and procedures relating to
contemporary adult guardianship legislation, health care decision making and best practice within a human rights framework.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work
being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
9. Participate in the on call after hours service provided by the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated knowledge of Northern Territory (NT) health and human services sector, particularly disability, mental illness,
aged care services and guardianship systems.
2. Demonstrated experience in working within legislative frameworks such as the Guardianship of Adults Act 2016, the Health Care
Decision Making Act 2023, related legislation, policies and standards relating to people with disabilities and ageing and impaired
decision making capacity.
3. Demonstrated ability to provide effective management and leadership within a multi-disciplinary team setting.
4. Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality adult guardianship services and health care decision making in line with the
principles, complexities and ethical considerations related to substitute decision making with a human rights focus.
5. High level communication, problem solving and negotiation skills with the ability to interact effectively with key stakeholders,
clients and their families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
6. Proven experience in service planning and ability to improve service delivery and practice.
7. Relevant degree qualification for example in the areas of health, social services or law.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of issues affecting adult guardianship services and health care delivery in regional and remote areas of the NT.
