About the role
LMATS is seeking an experienced and motivated Metallurgist / Materials Engineer to join our Perth team, with a strong focus on failure investigation and materials engineering. This is an excellent opportunity for a metallurgist who enjoys investigating the causes of material and component failures, conducting laboratory and field examinations, interpreting test results, and preparing detailed technical reports for clients across a range of industries. The successful candidate will be involved in investigations from initial inspection and evidence assessment through to testing, analysis, determination of likely failure mechanisms and preparation of technical reports. This role is available for a Immediate Start .
Key responsibilities
Conduct failure investigations of metals, welds, fabricated components, plant and equipment.
Perform and coordinate metallurgical examinations, including macro and micro examination, hardness testing, chemical analysis, mechanical testing, fracture surface examination, and weld and material assessment.
Identify and evaluate potential failure mechanisms, material defects and contributing factors.
Prepare samples and test specimens in accordance with applicable standards, procedures and NATA requirements.
Select appropriate test methods and equipment based on the investigation requirements.
Interpret and evaluate test results in accordance with relevant Australian and international Standards, Codes and Specifications.
Prepare clear, accurate and technically sound failure investigation and metallurgical reports.
Attend client sites when required to inspect failed components and collect evidence.
Communicate with clients regarding investigation scope, testing requirements and progress.
Maintain accurate records and ensure testing is completed to the required quality standards.
About you
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in metallurgical engineering and failure investigation.
Strong knowledge of metals, alloys, welding and manufacturing processes.
Experience with metallurgical laboratory testing and interpretation of results.
Good understanding of Australian and international material and testing Standards.
Strong technical report-writing and analytical skills.
Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
The ability to work independently as well as part of a technical team.
Good communication and client-facing skills.
A strong commitment to safety, quality and professional standards.
