About the role
The Role
The Configuration Officer is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex technical configuration management work, whilst exercising a reasonable degree of autonomy and accountability for achieving outcomes.
They will exercise initiative and sound judgement in interpreting and ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making processes, and Defence policy and capability requirements to support maritime capability outcomes.
Positional responsibilities include coordinating and facilitating Product Configuration Audits (PCA) and other continuous improvement initiatives to support engineering and sustainment plans. Maintain accuracy and integrity of configuration data within Configuration Management Tool- Unified (CMT-U) and related systems. Administer engineering management systems, ensuring configuration and technical records remain current, traceable and compliant with Defence requirements. Maintain and assure the platform and capability configuration baseline by managing approved changes, supporting configuration control activities, and providing advice on complex issues to internal and external stakeholders whilst ensuring effective governance and lifecycle management outcomes.
About our Team
Maritime Sustainment Division (MSD) operates within the Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group delivering in-service support to Navy and Army along with delivering new capability to Government. Our team sits within MSD and provides specialist engineering management and technical governance services in support of Defence maritime capabilities; working closely with stakeholders across Defence, delivering expert support across configuration management, technical data management and capability sustainment functions.

The ideal APS 6 Configuration Officer demonstrates strong technical expertise in configuration management, with the ability to perform complex tasks, manage configuration information, and ensure compliance with relevant policies, standards and procedures. They apply sound judgement to identify and manage risks, issues and uncertainties, supporting effective planning, decision-making and delivery outcomes across engineering, sustainment and related technical functions.
Successful candidates build and maintain productive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and work autonomously under broad direction. They are adaptable to changing priorities, highly organised, and capable of delivering quality outcomes in dynamic environments. The APS 6 Configuration Officer also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives, strengthening configuration management practices and supporting organisational objectives.
Above all, they demonstrate professionalism, integrity and accountability, consistently upholding the APS Values and Code of Conduct while contributing to Australia's maritime capability and operational success.
EligibilitySecurity Clearance:
Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.
Mandatory Qualifications:
This technical position requires the individual to possess a recognised Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 6 qualification in a relevant technical discipline, or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience that would enable attainment of an AQF Level 6 qualification if required by the position.
