Online Autism Studies Course - Unit Authoring and Design

VU is a dual sector University offering the ‘VU Block Model’, an Australian first where students focus on one unit at a time. Victoria University (VU) Online is seeking enthusiastic Career Development academics and/or industry experts to author postgraduate units for the Graduate Certificate in Career Development tailored for online delivery.

As a Curriculum Writer, you will work closely with our Learning Design Team to develop the following for each unit:

• 1 Unit Blueprint (the unit outline, assessments, and rubrics).

• 6 Storyboards (the weekly topics/content with student activities).

Candidates may nominate one or more units for which they have demonstrated subject matter expertise. Applicants do not need to demonstrate expertise across all four units:

• Unit 1: Inclusive Practices for Autism and Neurodiversity

• Unit 2: Inclusive Initiatives for Autism and Neurodiversity

• Unit 3: Inclusive Environments for Autism and Neurodiversity

• Unit 4: Strengths-based Assessment for Autism and Neurodiversity

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

1. A Master’s degree plus at least five years of relevant teaching and/or professional experience, OR a doctoral qualification (PhD), in Autism Studies, Education, Psychology, Allied Health, Disability Studies, or a closely related discipline.

2. Demonstrated knowledge in any of the following areas:

• Contemporary, evidence-informed and neurodiversity-affirming approaches to autism and neurodivergence.

• Inclusive practices, supports and initiatives that promote the participation, belonging, wellbeing and self-determination of autistic and neurodivergent people.

• The design and evaluation of inclusive environments across contexts such as education, health, workplaces, community services and other social settings.

• Strengths-based approaches to assessment and support, including approaches that recognise individual capabilities, preferences, needs and aspirations.

• Communication, environmental and general support strategies that can be adapted in partnership with autistic and neurodivergent people.

• Co-design and collaborative practice with autistic and neurodivergent people, families, communities and relevant professionals.

• Critical analysis of the research evidence, policy and practice relating to autism and neurodiversity in Australian and/or international contexts.

• The application of theoretical frameworks such as systems thinking and intersectionality to understanding the experiences of autistic and neurodivergent people.

• Ethical, culturally responsive and culturally safe practice, including consideration of diverse populations and the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

• Approaches to evaluating inclusive practices, environments and initiatives and their impact on engagement, participation and belonging.

Desired

1. Experience designing and/or authoring units in higher education (online or blended learning preferred). A brief example of how you design student-centred learning in an online context.

2. Relevant professional membership, registration and/or professional affiliation within a field related to autism, neurodiversity, education, psychology, allied health, disability, inclusion or community practice.

3. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with autistic and/or neurodivergent people and communities, particularly in the development, implementation or evaluation of inclusive practices, supports, environments or initiatives.
