You will deliver safe, therapeutic inpatient care for adolescents, with opportunities to learn, grow and make a meaningful contribution within a supportive clinical environment at Cairns Hospital.

Cairns Hospital is the largest major referral hospital in Far North Queensland, providing specialized health services and comprehensive care to patients from the Torres Strait to Tully. Our population is 260,000 with First Nations people making up 14% of the region's population. Cairns Hospital provides a range of specialist outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services from its CBD site on the Cairns Esplanade and has over 500 inpatient beds.

The Cairns Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Service (CAMHIS) currently operates within the Paediatric / Adolescent Ward and also provides care to young people in other wards, such as the Adult Mental Health unit.  A purpose-built eight-bed unit is scheduled for opening in early 2027. The CAMHIS team provides inpatient care for young people aged 13-17 years of age who are experiencing severe and/or complex mental health difficulties, who require 24-hour clinical support and treatment and who cannot be adequately or safely supported in the community. The team aims to provide acute inpatient mental health treatment to young people in a safe and supervised environment during a period of acuity or exacerbation of mental illness.

About your role: 

Your main tasks may include (but are not limited to):

• Building a therapeutic relationship with consumers based on trust, warmth, and empathy.
• Recognizing and responding to acute and/or physical deterioration in a consumer.
• Liaising with the multi-disciplinary team and adhering to treatment plans.
• Dispensing, administration, and recording of medication.
