Senior Policy and Project Officer - Intelligence

• 4 years Temporary Full Time 
• 35 hours per week 
• Location: Willing to consider candidates across all NSW locations. Preference will be given to candidates based regionally, with a focus on Queanbeyan, Armidale, Dubbo and Coffs Harbour  
• Professional Officer Grade 5 - salary from $154,231 to $157,312 per annum (FTE) plus super and leave loading  

About the Role

As the Senior Policy and Project Officer - Intelligence, you'll use epidemiology, disease intelligence and risk analysis to lead animal biosecurity projects, develop evidence-based policy and advice, and strengthen NSW's preparedness and response to animal health threats.

In this highly collaborative role, you'll work closely with colleagues across DPIRD, Local Land Services, government agencies, industry and research organisations to analyse surveillance data, assess biosecurity risks and develop practical solutions that support animal health, public health and emergency preparedness outcomes. Your expertise will help identify emerging issues, inform strategic decision-making and contribute to contemporary biosecurity policy, including zoonotic disease preparedness and response.

What You'll Do

• Lead and deliver intelligence-driven biosecurity policy and project initiatives.
• Analyse surveillance data, disease intelligence and emerging threats to support evidence-based decision-making.
• Undertake epidemiological investigations, risk assessments, mapping and analytical activities to inform policy and operational responses.
• Provide technical advice and evidence-based recommendations on emerging animal biosecurity risks.
• Develop high-quality briefings, reports, submissions, ministerial correspondence and strategic advice.
• Represent the Department at state and national forums on animal biosecurity, public health and emergency animal disease matters.
• Support animal health preparedness activities and responses to biosecurity incidents across NSW.

About You

You are a strategic thinker who enjoys solving complex problems and translating information into practical policy and program outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you must hold

• Tertiary qualifications in Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Epidemiology or a related discipline.
• Current NSW Driver Licence (and the ability and willingness to travel)

Our ideal candidate will bring:

• Demonstrated experience in biosecurity risk management and policy development.
• Experience in animal biosecurity, epidemiology, intelligence, disease surveillance or risk analysis.
• Strong analytical skills, including experience managing, interpreting and applying epidemiological or biosecurity data to support decision-making.
• Experience using evidence-based analysis, spatial data, mapping or predictive approaches to identify risks and inform policy solutions.
• Knowledge of the Australian animal health framework and contemporary biosecurity challenges.
• Excellent written communication skills, including the preparation of reports, high quality briefings, submissions and Ministerial correspondence.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build productive relationships across government, industry and research sectors.
