Project Engineer – Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Sydney

Role OverviewTrina Energy Storage is seeking one highly motivated and technically skilled Project Engineer to support the delivery of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Australia. These roles will provide critical engineering support throughout the lifecycle of BESS projects—from design and procurement, to construction, commissioning, and handover.As a key interface between Trina’s local project team, customers, subcontractors, and global product and R&D teams, the Project Engineer will support project coordination, technical issue resolution, and engineering deliverables. Candidates with a background or practical exposure in SCADA, EMS, PPC, control systems, or industrial communications will be highly regarded.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport engineering execution for utility-scale BESS projects from design coordination through construction, testing, commissioning and handover.Follow up technical issues raised by customers, EPC contractors, consultants, vendors, site teams and internal stakeholders.Review and coordinate technical documents, drawings, RFIs, technical clarifications, design comments, interface documents and engineering action items.Support technical evaluation and coordination of BESS components, including battery systems, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear, EMS/PMS, SCADA, PPC, communications and auxiliary equipment.Interpret and review SLDs, layout drawings, interface diagrams, protection settings, communication architecture drawings and control schematics.Coordinate technical interfaces across BESS subsystems, including batteries, PCS, EMS, PPC, SCADA, Gateway RTU, meters, protection systems and communication interfaces.Work with global R&D, product teams, firmware teams, OEM suppliers, control system vendors and EPC contractors to follow up technical matters and close engineering actions.Support PPC, EMS and BESS SCADA integration activities, including signal coordination, communication interfaces and protocol-related follow-up.Support coordination and testing of communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, IEC 61850 and DNP3 where applicable.Support FAT, SAT, site testing, commissioning, performance testing and grid compliance-related activities.Provide technical support during R1/R2 hold point testing and AEMO/NSP coordination, including AGC tracking, frequency response, voltage control, PPC/EMS/SCADA signal verification and communication interface testing.Record technical issues, support troubleshooting, follow up corrective actions and track closure of defects, punch list items and technical actions.Maintain technical document logs, drawing review records, RFIs, NCRs, submittals, engineering reports, test records and commissioning documentation.Work closely with the Project Manager to provide technical input for project planning, risk tracking, customer communication and issue resolution.Escalate technical risks, interface gaps or delivery blockers with clear background information and recommended next steps.Ability and willingness to travel to project sites and supplier facilities when required.
Qualifications and SkillsDegree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, Control Systems, Automation or a related discipline.Minimum 1–3 years of engineering or site support experience in renewable energy projects, preferably involving BESS, solar PV, wind farm, substations, grid integration, SCADA or control systems.Basic understanding of utility-scale BESS architecture, PCS/inverter integration, EMS, PPC, SCADA, industrial communications and commissioning processes.Ability to read and understand technical drawings, SLDs, interface diagrams, communication architecture drawings and control system documentation.Good coordination, documentation, follow-up and problem-solving skills.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with customers, EPC contractors, vendors, consultants, site teams and internal global engineering teams.Fluency in English is essential. Mandarin language skills are highly regarded, especially for coordinating with Trina’s global R&D and engineering teams, but not mandatory.
Highly RegardedExperience in utility-scale BESS, solar PV, wind, substations or grid-connected infrastructure projects in Australia.Exposure to Plant Power Controller functional design, EMS architecture, BESS control logic or industrial communication systems.Exposure to construction, energisation, commissioning, grid compliance and handover activities.Knowledge of GPS preparation, AEMO/NSP coordination, generator registration or R1/R2 hold-point testing.Experience with Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, SharePoint, Teams, Confluence, Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat or document-control systems.Hands-on exposure to FAT/SAT, testing procedures, commissioning records, SCADA signal verification or grid compliance reporting.
