About VALS

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and the state’s only specialist legal and support service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Since 1973, we’ve provided culturally safe legal representation, advocacy and support across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice and specialist litigation. Our services also include a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, family violence programs, transitional housing, community legal education and client support.

About the role

You’ll support managers and employees across a broad range of Human Resources activities while continuing to develop your advisory capability.

This role offers exposure to employee relations, workplace investigations, award interpretation, enterprise agreement application, HR administration, WHS compliance and organisational projects. You’ll work closely with the HR Manager, gaining valuable experience and coaching as you develop your career.

No two days are the same, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, problem solving and building strong working relationships.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide first-line HR advice and support to managers and employees.
• Assist with interpreting the SCHADS Award and Enterprise Agreement.
• Support employee relations matters, including investigations, performance matters and grievances.
• Prepare HR correspondence, contracts, reports and employment documentation.
• Coordinate onboarding, offboarding and employee lifecycle administration.
• Maintain accurate employee records and HR systems.
• Support WHS administration, reporting and compliance activities.

About you

You’re someone who enjoys helping people, learning new things and solving problems. You’re organised, curious and ready to take the next step in your HR career.

You’ll bring:

• Around two years’ experience in an HR Coordinator, HR Generalist or similar role.
• A sound understanding of contemporary HR practices.
• Exposure to the SCHADS Award, Enterprise Agreements or employment legislation (or a strong willingness to learn).
• Strong organisational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Confidence building relationships with a range of stakeholders.
• Experience using HR information systems and Microsoft Office.
• Experience or exposure in investigations, performance management, and conflict resolution. 
• A collaborative approach and genuine commitment to continuous learning.

Mandatory requirements
To be successful, you’ll have:

• A qualification in Human Resources, Business or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
