About the role
If you've spent some time working with Self-Managed Superannuation Funds, you'll know that not all SMSF roles are the same.
Some are highly transactional. Some offer limited opportunities to grow beyond day-to-day processing. And some give you the chance to help build something from the ground up.
At GMD Advisory, we're looking for an SMSF Accountant to establish and lead the next phase of our SMSF service offering.
This is a unique opportunity for someone with SMSF administration or accounting experience who is looking to take ownership of their work, develop specialist expertise, and play a key role in shaping the future of a growing SMSF division.
As a well-established boutique accounting and advisory firm, we already provide a broad range of accounting, tax and advisory services to a loyal and growing client base. We see significant opportunities within the SMSF space and are looking for the right person to help us build and develop this area of the business.
Initially, you will be the dedicated SMSF specialist within the firm, working closely with the partners and broader accounting team to manage existing SMSF clients, establish best-practice processes, and contribute to the continued growth of the division. As the portfolio expands, you will have the opportunity to play a key role in shaping workflows, improving systems, and helping build the SMSF team around you.
This role offers a level of ownership and influence that is rarely available in traditional SMSF accounting positions while still providing the support, resources, and professional development opportunities of an established firm.
You'll be joining a collaborative and supportive workplace that values technical excellence, initiative, continuous improvement, and strong client relationships.
What You'll Be DoingPreparing financial statements and annual accounts for a portfolio of Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs).
Preparing SMSF annual returns and coordinating compliance requirements.
Liaising with auditors and assisting with the completion of SMSF audits.
Monitoring fund compliance and identifying potential breaches of superannuation legislation.
Processing contributions, pensions, investment transactions, and benefit payments.
Assisting with the establishment, wind-up, and restructuring of SMSFs where required.
Supporting advisers and partners with strategic superannuation and retirement planning matters.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and external stakeholders.
Assisting with workflow management and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the SMSF team.
Supporting and mentoring junior team members where appropriate.
We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, proactive, and passionate about delivering high-quality outcomes for clients.
Ideally, you will have:
1+ years' experience in public practice, SMSF administration, or SMSF accounting.
Experience preparing SMSF financial statements and annual returns.
Intermediate technical knowledge of self-managed superannuation funds and Australian superannuation legislation.
A sound understanding of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act (SIS Act) and SMSF compliance requirements.
Experience using SMSF software such as BGL 360, or similar platforms.
Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
The ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
Professional communication and relationship-building skills.
CA or CPA qualified, or currently studying towards completion (highly regarded).
A genuine interest in superannuation, retirement planning, and ongoing professional development.
Competitive salary package based on experience.
On-site parking in central Southport.
Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
Direct mentoring and support from experienced partners.
Exposure to a diverse range of SMSF clients and complex superannuation matters.
Modern cloud-based systems and efficient workflows.
Regular social and team events throughout the year.
A supportive and collaborative team environment.
Long-term career development opportunities within a well-established and growing firm.
At GMD Advisory, we believe great client outcomes start with great people. We foster a professional environment where initiative is encouraged, knowledge is shared, and team members are supported to develop their careers.
If you're looking for more than just another SMSF accounting role and would like the opportunity to help build and shape a growing SMSF division within an established advisory firm, we'd love to hear from you.
