The Position

NEPEAN Engineering is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Estimator to join our team located in Prestons, NSW.  NEPEAN Engineering designs, fabricates and erects structural steel for heavy industrial, mining, infrastructure and defence projects across Australia. This critical role within the business division, will suit a commercially minded experienced estimator who understands structural steel, enjoys working closely with customers and internal project teams, and can balance detail, accuracy, risk awareness and responsiveness in a fast-moving project environment. You will play an important role in providing accurate pricing, shaping competitive tenders, supporting profitable project delivery while helping drive continued growth across our customer base and target markets.

About the role

The role covers structural steel fabrication, erection, engineering and associated services, with a strong focus on material take-offs, supplier and subcontractor pricing, value engineering, tender qualifications and customer engagement. You will own pricing and tender strategy for structural steel fabrication and erection projects, working closely with project managers, engineers and customers from first enquiry through to contract handover to ensure estimates accurately reflect project requirements, constructability, execution methodology and commercial outcomes.

Beyond estimating, this role will also contribute to customer relationship management, market growth, new opportunity identification and the promotion of NEPEAN Engineering’s structural steel, fabrication and engineering capabilities.

Key responsibilities

• Review RFQs, drawings, specifications, contracts and tender documentation to accurately define project scope, requirements and commercial opportunities.
• Prepare detailed and competitive estimates for structural steel fabrication, erection, engineering and associated services.
• Complete material take-offs from structural, architectural and shop drawings, including steel tonnage, connections, coatings, consumables and related project materials.
• Obtain, evaluate and negotiate supplier and subcontractor quotations to support commercially competitive pricing.
• Identify bid qualifications, exclusions, assumptions, clarifications and value-engineering opportunities.
• Assess project risks, constructability considerations, resource requirements and commercial exposures during the estimating process.
• Maintain accurate pricing information, historical cost data and market intelligence to support estimate accuracy and competitiveness.
• Coordinate thorough project handovers, ensuring costings, budgets, scope details, customer requirements and documentation are ready for the delivery team and ERP upload.
• Support customer relationship management, CRM accuracy, market development and proactive engagement with prospective customers on major and long-term projects.

About you

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar structural steel estimating role.
• Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication processes, erection methodologies, welding, surface treatment systems and Australian Standards.
• Proven ability to interpret structural, architectural, fabrication and erection drawings and specifications.
• Ability to review contract conditions and identify commercial, contractual and delivery risks that may impact project profitability.
• Experience using estimating software, ERP systems, CRM systems and advanced Microsoft Excel for cost modelling and tender preparation.
• Trade certificate and/or relevant tertiary qualifications will be highly regarded.
• Current Class C driver licence.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
• Strong attention to detail, commercial judgement, persistence and the ability to solve complex problems.
• A collaborative, adaptable and organised approach, with a willingness to support others and contribute to team success.
