Lead Data Scientist - Trading

How you'll be a part of the action 

Reporting to the Head of Wagering Data Analytics and Segmentation, you will lead the design, delivery and continuous improvement of pricing and risk models that drive performance across our Wagering Trading team. You will partner with traders, product and technology to turn ideas into measurable commercial results.

• Lead development of probabilistic pricing models for sport and racing markets — from fixed-odds and exotic pricing to in-play and derivative markets.
• Design and improve models that generate accurate and competitive prices across thoroughbred, harness, greyhound and multi-sport events.
• Build models that account for market dynamics, form, conditions, venue and real-time signals to produce prices that balance competitiveness with margin.
• Partner with traders to develop automated pricing and risk frameworks that reduce manual intervention and improve speed to market.
• Create model monitoring and feedback loops — tracking price accuracy, overrounds, market movement and settlement outcomes to continuously improve model performance.
• Shape and grow a high-performing data science team with clear standards, strong coaching and a focus on delivery.
• Champion ethical, purpose-led use of data to enhance customer outcomes and meet regulatory obligations.

What you'll need to succeed

You are a curious, hands-on leader who balances scientific rigour with practical delivery. You understand how a wagering trading operation works and know what good pricing looks like — not just mathematically, but commercially.

• Deep experience in wagering, sports betting or racing pricing — you understand how odds are formed, how markets move, and where model-driven pricing creates edge.
• Proven track record building probabilistic models for event outcomes — win/place, head-to-head, line, total, multi-leg and in-play markets.
• Experience working with racing form data, ratings, speed maps, track/weather conditions and translating these into pricing inputs.
• Understanding of overround management, liability and risk exposure and how pricing models interact with trading decisions.
• Familiarity with real-time data feeds and low-latency environments — pricing models that need to perform under event-time pressure, not just in batch.
• Proven ability to lead, coach and grow data scientists and modellers.
• Strong programming capability in Python and SQL, with experience in modern ML frameworks and cloud platforms (Databricks, AWS, MLflow or similar).
• Ability to translate complex analysis into clear stories and decisions for traders, product teams and senior leaders.
• Proven capability to design model governance, documentation and testing disciplines.

What will set you apart

• Experience with Australian racing and/or sport wagering markets specifically.
• Background in Bayesian modelling, simulation or stochastic methods applied to pricing.
• Exposure to reinforcement learning or dynamic pricing optimisation for in-play or live markets.
• Understanding of customer-level pricing dynamics — how price sensitivity, segmentation and market positioning interact with margin targets.
• Experience operating within a licensed, regulated wagering environment and understanding of responsible gambling obligations.
