Sewing Machinist / Sailmaker

If you've spent your career sewing in factories, furniture workshops or production environments, this might be one of the most interesting workplaces you'll ever walk into.

We are recruiting for a specialist Australian manufacturer based in Kurnell who are looking for an experienced Sewing Machinist to join their production team.

And this is one of those jobs that is genuinely difficult to explain properly until you see the place.

We've visited a lot of workshops.

We haven't seen many like this.

The facility is incredibly spacious, clean and organised, with a production setup that has clearly been thought through over decades rather than thrown together as the business grew.

There are nine industrial sewing machines, separate production rooms designed to keep different stages of work organised, two CNC machines and a workflow that feels surprisingly calm and relaxed for a manufacturing environment.

Everything has its place.

The sewing machines themselves are set up in a way we genuinely hadn't seen before.

It is the kind of workshop where you walk through the door and immediately realise someone has put a huge amount of thought into how people actually work.

The business manufactures highly specialised technical products that are used by customers around the world.

The sewing is detailed, interesting and quality matters.

You're not sitting there smashing out the same basic product hundreds of times a day.

You'll be working with large pieces of technical fabric, following patterns, assembling components and producing finished products where accuracy and workmanship genuinely matter.

There is plenty to learn, and they are happy to teach someone the specifics of what they manufacture.

What they need from you is a strong foundation behind an industrial sewing machine.

Today the business is run by its second generation, and there is still a huge amount of passion behind what they manufacture and the industry they are part of.

This isn't a corporate production facility where nobody knows who you are.

It is a specialist manufacturer that has spent decades developing its products, processes and reputation.

And that history shows in the team.

A number of employees have been there for 10 years or more.

People actually know each other.

The team regularly sits down and eats lunch together.

There is a closeness to the workplace that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in manufacturing.

This was probably the biggest thing we took away from visiting them.

It is genuinely impressive.

The workshop is spacious, exceptionally well organised and clean.

Different areas of production are separated properly rather than everything being crammed into one noisy room.

The workflow feels peaceful and methodical.

There is room to work properly.

And the sewing area in particular has been designed in a very unique way to make working with large pieces of material easier.

It genuinely has to be seen to be believed.

For an experienced machinist who has spent years working in cramped, noisy or poorly organised factories, this is a completely different environment.

This business isn't interested in burning through people.

Their staff retention tells you that.

They want someone who can become part of the team, learn the products properly and eventually know the work inside and out.

You don't need experience making their particular product.

They can teach you that.

You do need to be comfortable behind an industrial sewing machine and care about the quality of what leaves your hands.

The right person will ideally:

• Have previous industrial sewing experience

• Be confident operating industrial sewing machines

• Have experience working with heavier fabrics or materials

• Have good attention to detail

• Be able to follow patterns and instructions

• Take pride in producing quality work

• Be reliable and consistent

• Enjoy working as part of a close team

• Be willing to learn a completely different type of manufacturing

• Want stable, long-term employment

Experience within furniture, upholstery, marine, automotive, canvas or technical textiles would translate particularly well.

Full-time permanent employment.

Strong hourly rates depending on experience.

Onsite parking.

A clean, spacious and exceptionally well-organised workshop.

Interesting work that is very different from ordinary production sewing.
