The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health Ltd was established by its founding members to provide a coordinated/integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the Southeast Qld Region.

The Regional and Specialist team includes Integrated Specialist Services, Mental Health and Wellbeing Services, Primary Healthcare Services, Birthing and Early Childhood Services (South), and Child and Youth Services. About the Role?

The Gambling Support Counsellor provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed and person-centred counselling, assessment, referral and casework support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities impacted by gambling harm.

The role delivers Gambling Support Services across IUIH Member Services, supporting individuals and affected others experiencing social, emotional, financial and wellbeing impacts associated with gambling harm. The position works collaboratively with internal multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to ensure service users can access holistic and culturally appropriate supports.

Your day-to-day duties will include:

• Deliver culturally responsive therapeutic counselling and casework support to individuals, families and affected others experiencing gambling harm.
• Facilitate counselling interventions using trauma-informed, strengths-based and holistic approaches that incorporate Social and Emotional Wellbeing principles.
• Conduct intake, assessment and risk screening processes to identify service user needs, goals, strengths, risk and protective factors.
• Develop collaborative support plans with service users that incorporate cultural strengths, community connections and recovery goals.
• Provide ongoing follow-up, relapse prevention, aftercare planning and engagement strategies to support sustained behaviour change and wellbeing outcomes.

About You?

• Tertiary qualification in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or related discipline. Must hold a minimum of an Australian Qualification Framework level five in Counselling or equivalent.
• Hold membership/registration with a professional organisation that represents counsellors or equivalent:
  • The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board
  • Psychology Board of Australia
  • Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
  • Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA)
  • Australian Counselling Association (ACA)
  • Australian Community Counselling Association (ACCA)
• Demonstrated experience providing counselling, case management or psychosocial support to individuals experiencing complex needs.
• Understanding of gambling harm and its impacts on individuals, families and communities.
• Current Criminal History Check
• Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD)
• Current Working with Children’s Check (Qld Blue Card)
• Current Disability Worker Screening Check (Qld Yellow Card)

Desirable, but not mandatory:

• Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
• Experience working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.
• Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and knowledge of culturally responsive therapeutic approaches.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practice frameworks.
• Experience working within Gambling Help Services, mental health, AOD or psychosocial support settings.
