What does it take to build an AI that designs, simulates, and draws a waste gasification plant — and hands a fabricator a file no human had to redraw? Bali is the doorway, not the destination. This is phase one: getting the right people in to start. This is a CAD AI engineering internship on Waste Conversion Technologies at Zero-X. The bigger goal is AI that helps us turn waste into clean power and high-quality gas. Zero-X is the engineering company behind that goal, named to Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies, Energy, 2018; funded by Projekträger Jülich (PTJ), the German federal research agency; with a PhD track across universities including TU Munich, the Fraunhofer Institute, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). We just finished managing project Cometha ('Waste to Methane') for the City of Paris. The plants are loud, the data lies, and commissioning will humble you. That is the job. Real execution on a live system — the proof employers hire on. Everyone has a degree. Almost nobody has proof.
What you build
Not a task list. The thing you build.
We are currently manufacturing the first container-based waste gasification unit. This is done, but tar reforming, gas conversion, and gas upgrades to methane or hydrogen are still open. You build the generative CAD pipeline. You work on the waste gasification component layout turned into a 3D part tree. A drawing set a fabricator can use without you in the room is the output. A simulation of one key component, checked against the physical constraints of the container-based unit, is the test.
The bar
A CAD model or simulation built outside coursework of one of our key components, with the failure points named, is the bar. A drawing set another person can send to a manufacturer without you in the room is the bar. You have caught what an AI-generated part tree gets wrong and fixed it before the handoff. A hard dimensioning problem stayed on the table until the model matched the physical part.
Who this is for
Engineers, physicists, and data analysts who work until the model matches the physical component. They move between CAD, simulation, and fabrication without losing the thread. They understand that AI is here now, and that most university graduates have barely scratched the surface of what is possible today — and tomorrow.
Where you do it — and why here
Thirty years building companies — New York, London, Tokyo, the Valley — and then it stopped mattering where the work happened. So the program runs on-site in Canggu, Bali. Epic Solutions PT runs that program. A modern company costs twelve people and a toolchain — so being wrong six times a year is part of how we build. The campus is 4,000 sqm, and the people who run the companies are on it every day. What this location buys is attention, not a view. Monday reset, Friday ship — send what you made. Everything you built last week is worthless, and that is the freedom: you are not married to it. One cohort, on-site, the full phase — not remote.
What happens after
Seventeen interns have moved into full-time roles across the group — Bali, Spain, Germany. From here the path runs to an engineering seat at Energaia Institute in Melbourne, beside our Monash development partner. The internship is step one; paid work is the destination, for the ones who stay. The role, visa, and pay for that destination are agreed before you commit, never after. Earned, not guaranteed.

Requirements
A degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent — proof you can finish something. Not what you know, but how fast you learn — you move between domains and stay calm when the map goes useless. Something you built that nobody asked for. AI is the stack, not hand-written code — Claude Code, Hermes, Codex; the skill is driving them and catching what they get wrong. On-site for the full phase.
