About the role
About Us
The Motor Trade Association of Western Australia (MTA WA) is the peak body representing the WA automotive industry. Through advocacy, training, apprentice employment, membership services and industry leadership, we support thousands of automotive businesses across the state.
As we continue to modernise and strengthen our finance function, we're seeking a Financial Accountant to play a key role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting strategic initiatives and contributing to the future development of our finance systems and processes.
About the Role
Reporting to the Financial Controller, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, compliance and integrity of financial reporting across the MTA WA Group.
This is more than a traditional financial accounting role. You'll partner closely with the Financial Controller and Management Accountant, helping deliver strong financial controls, reliable financial information and continuous improvement initiatives. You'll also play an important role in upcoming finance transformation projects, including ERP and systems enhancement activities.
The role offers exposure to a diverse range of accounting responsibilities across multiple entities, making it an excellent opportunity for an ambitious accountant seeking breadth, variety and professional growth.
This role is ideally suited to a technically strong accountant who enjoys combining financial control and compliance responsibilities with process improvement, systems enhancement and business improvement initiatives. As the finance function continues to evolve, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change, improve processes and help position finance as a strategic partner to the business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
Prepare month-end journals, accruals and prepayments.
Perform balance sheet reconciliations and investigate reconciling items.
Maintain general ledger integrity and supporting workpapers.
Support year-end processes, statutory reporting and audit requirements.
Compliance & Financial Controls
Prepare and maintain GST, BAS, FBT, payroll tax and other compliance workpapers.
Support external audits and respond to audit queries.
Monitor financial controls and ensure compliance with delegated authorities and approval processes.
Identify, investigate and escalate discrepancies and control issues.
Cashflow, Banking & Operational Finance
Support cashflow monitoring and banking activities.
Review payroll accounting, control account reconciliations and operational finance processes.
Assist with maintaining strong financial controls across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll.
Government Funding & Grants
Manage government funding, grants and incentive claims from preparation through to submission and acquittal.
Coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure claims are accurate and submitted on time.
Maintain funding registers and supporting documentation.
Continuous Improvement & Systems
Contribute to ERP implementation and finance system enhancement projects.
Identify opportunities to automate processes, improve controls and reduce manual effort.
Support ongoing process improvement initiatives across the finance function.
About You
You are a detail-oriented finance professional who enjoys understanding how things work, solving problems and improving processes.
You'll bring:
Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Commerce or Finance.
Experience in financial accounting, month-end close, reconciliations and statutory compliance.
Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and taxation compliance requirements.
Advanced Excel skills and the ability to analyse financial data effectively.
Experience working with ERP or accounting systems.
Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across the business.
CPA, CA or IPA qualification (or working towards completion) will be highly regarded.
