Communications Coordinator

ASHM is a not-for-profit organisation seeking a passionate Communications Coordinator who is genuinely committed to building a career in communications. This role will play a key part in developing content for ASHM’s owned channels (website, social media and email newsletters) to communicate our services, resources, and initiatives to key audiences across the HIV, blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and sexual and reproductive health sectors.

You’re an enthusiastic communications professional who enjoys creating engaging content and translating complex information into clear and accessible communications. You’re curious, organised, and eager to develop your skills while contributing to meaningful work.

 We’re looking for someone who:

• Builds positive relationships and communicates confidently with stakeholders.
• Is adaptable and comfortable working in a changing environment.
• Has a genuine interest in public health or the not-for-profit sector.

 Location: Melbourne or Sydney (open to applicants based in either location)

Employment Status: Full time, 12-month contract

Salary: $65,000 – $70,000 + Super + NFP salary packaging benefits (commensurate with skills and experience) 

The final offer within the advertised range will depend on the successful candidate’s skills and experience.

 Key Responsibilities

Content Creation & Digital Communications

• Create high-quality content across ASHM-owned channels, including email newsletters.
• Research topics, interview subject matter experts, and identify relevant story angles.
• Develop written and visual content aligned with ASHM’s brand, editorial standards, and communication objectives.
• Coordinate email campaigns promoting programs, events, education, and stakeholder initiatives.

Website & Digital Presence

• Maintain and update ASHM’s website to ensure content is accurate, relevant and engaging.
• Publish new content and optimise existing pages to support user experience and organisational objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders from aligned organisations.
• Develop reciprocal opportunities to share content with key contacts.

Communications & Sector Awareness

• Monitor developments across HIV, blood-borne viruses, and sexual and reproductive health to identify relevant communication opportunities.
• Share key news, research and sector updates with internal stakeholders to support organisational knowledge and engagement.

Planning & Project Support

• Manage competing priorities to deliver communications activities on time and to a high standard.
• Support communications projects and other organisational initiatives as required.

 Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• Tertiary qualification in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• 1+ years’ experience in a communications role.
• Experience in the not-for-profit, health or education sectors, particularly HIV, blood-borne viruses or sexual and reproductive health.
• Willingness to travel interstate as required.

Desirable

• Graphic design experience (i.e. Adobe suite or Canva)
• Experience creating and editing video content (primarily for social media)
• Experience managing website backends
• Understanding of SEO principles, social media advertising or digital analytics
• Conference or event marketing experience
• Experience with email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor, or similar)

Skills and Abilities

• Strong writing, editing and content development skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Confidence using digital communication tools and platforms.
• Ability to identify communication opportunities and contribute ideas.
• Interest in, or willingness to learn about, HIV, viral hepatitis and sexual and reproductive health issues.
