About the role
Statistician
QTAC is a not-for-profit organisation that provides and operates an equitable and centralised tertiary entrance system on behalf of our member and participating institutions to provide comprehensive information for prospective applicants. The institutions that participate in QTAC determine their own admission requirements and QTAC ensures that these admission rules and procedures are administered in a transparent, consistent and equitable manner.
As QTAC continues to strengthen its admissions, analytics and decision-support capabilities, we are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Statistician to support the delivery of accurate statistical advice, robust technical processes and high-quality reporting across QTAC’s core operations.
This is a key specialist role responsible for contributing to the yearly calculation of the Queensland Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR), refining technical processes and documentation, and providing statistical analysis to support QTAC’s operations and strategic initiatives. Working closely with internal teams, external stakeholders and key partners, including QCAA, institutions, government and schools, you will help ensure QTAC’s statistical processes are accurate, reliable, well-documented and fit for purpose.
You will contribute to research, ATAR calculation processes, statistical reporting, forecasting, cohort studies and the ongoing evaluation of QTAC’s admission systems. You will also play an important role in supporting data governance, improving analytical capability and providing clear technical and non-technical advice to stakeholders.
This is an exciting opportunity for a statistician who enjoys working with complex data, applying strong mathematical and analytical skills, contributing to meaningful education outcomes and supporting continuous improvement in a trusted, purpose-led organisation.
You will benefit from:
An immediate start
A respected and stable organisation
A positive and rewarding team culture
Up-to-date technology and a modern office environment
Work from home flexibility
Recognition for success
Doing work that matters as we pioneer innovative and cutting-edge services to tertiary institutions and year 11 and 12 students
Our unique QTAC culture - with fun team activities and inclusive social events, we celebrate achievements and take immense pride and accountability for the work that we do and the impact we have.
Our culture of growth and development while retaining an inclusive and family feel, along with work/life balance, will ensure you have the support you need to make a success of your next career move. Join our fast-paced, and ambitious organisation and enjoy making a significant impact and being part of our exciting growth story.
You will:
Contribute to the delivery and continuous improvement of QTAC's statistical, admissions and research capabilities, supporting informed decision-making across the organisation.
Play a key role in the calculation, review and ongoing refinement of the Queensland ATAR methodology and associated technical processes.
Provide expert statistical advice and analysis to internal stakeholders, institutions, government agencies and other education sector partners.
Conduct research, cohort studies and analytical projects that support admissions policy, selection processes and strategic business initiatives.
Prepare and present high-quality statistical reports, technical documentation and insights for a range of audiences, including executive leaders, institutions and external stakeholders.
Develop and apply statistical models, forecasting tools and analytical techniques to support business planning and future demand projections.
Collaborate with QCAA, institutions and internal teams to ensure the integrity, security and quality of data used in admissions and ranking processes.
Identify opportunities to improve statistical methodologies, analytical capability, data governance practices and operational processes.
Translate complex statistical concepts into clear, practical advice for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Contribute to a collaborative, positive and high-performing team culture while supporting critical business activities and organisational priorities.
Required Skills and Experience
You must have:
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse and disseminate significant amounts of information with a high level of accuracy.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply sound judgement to complex data and statistical matters.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Extensive experience preparing statistical reports.
Proficiency in computer languages such as R, Python and SQL.
Strong mathematical capability, including linear algebra, calculus and probability.
A Bachelor degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or a similar discipline.
