About the role
Centacare North Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation delivering counselling, family support, disability services, youth programs, crisis housing, education and community services across North Queensland, including Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Normanton.
We are seeking a Family Support Officer to join our BRDIGE Program in Mount Isa — a secondary family support service focused on early intervention, strengthening family functioning, and reducing risk to children and young people.
Benefits you will enjoy
Working under the guidance of a Senior Practitioner, you will support families experiencing vulnerability by providing practical, culturally responsive early intervention strategies that build resilience, safety, and capacity within the home.
You’ll work collaboratively with families and community stakeholders to prevent issues from escalating and to support positive, sustainable change.
What you'll be doing
In this role, you will:
Build strong, respectful relationships with families while maintaining professional boundaries
Support family assessments through engagement, observation, and tools such as Family Star
Provide practical strategies to strengthen parenting capacity and promote safe, positive family environments
Assist with parenting education groups and workshops
Deliver culturally appropriate support to diverse families, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and CALD communities
Maintain accurate client files, case notes, and documentation in line with policy and program requirements
Collaborate with government and non-government services to support families holistically
Identify and escalate safety concerns in line with organisational policy
Participate in supervision, team meetings, professional development, and service planning
What you'll bring
Essential:
Certificate IV or higher in Community Services (or similar)
Experience working with vulnerable families in a strengths-based, non-judgemental way
Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
Understanding of family functioning across diverse cultural and social contexts
Demonstrated experience or capability in conducting safety and risk assessments
Well-developed organisational and administrative skills
Current open driver licence
Current (or ability to obtain) Blue Card and NDIS Worker Screening / Yellow Card
Experience in community services, not-for-profit, or faith-based settings
Experience or interest in group work or community education
If you’re passionate about supporting families and creating safer futures for children, we’d love to hear from you.
