Business Development Manager

SMS Group Services is a proudly Western Australian, Tier 1 industrial services contractor with over 20 years’ experience delivering safe, reliable and innovative solutions. We partner with major clients across mining, defence, infrastructure, marine, energy and industrial maintenance, providing services including scaffolding and engineered access, rope access, shutdown services, coatings, insulation and cladding, confined space management and project access management.

The Role

This is a hands-on business development role focused on identifying, pursuing, and winning new clients and projects across the construction, resources, and infrastructure sectors in Western Australia.

The role is directly responsible for generating new revenue opportunities through proactive relationship-building, market engagement, and tender pursuit, and converting pipeline activity into secured work across projects, shutdowns and term contracts.

Key Responsibilities

• Proactively identify and pursue new clients and project opportunities across target sectors.
• Build and maintain relationships with principal contractors, developers, and project decision-makers.
• Represent SMS Group Services professionally in client meetings, industry events, and site visits.
• Establish and maintain a clear, accurate record of business development activity, including prospects, live opportunities, conversion status, and lost-opportunity reasons.
• Identify relevant tender opportunities and lead the coordination of timely, high-quality submissions.
• Work with technical, estimating, and operations teams to ensure proposals are accurate and competitive.
• Maintain awareness of upcoming projects, tenders, and decision-makers ahead of public advertisement where possible.
• Build and protect the company's reputation and network within the WA construction and resources sectors.
• Provide input into growth strategy and target sector prioritisation.

Essential Criteria

• Demonstrated experience in a business development or sales role within construction, industrial services, or a related B2B contracting environment.
• Strong understanding of service‑based contracting environments (scaffolding, access services, shutdowns, coatings or similar)
• Existing network and credibility within the Western Australian construction and/or resources sector.
• Proven ability to independently identify, pursue, and close new business opportunities.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels, including senior decision-makers.
• Ability to manage own workload and pipeline with minimal supervision.
• Self‑motivated, organised and results‑driven
• Current driver's licence and willingness to travel to client sites and project locations across WA.
• Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate client availability and industry events.

Desirable Criteria

• Background in estimating, project delivery, or technical roles within construction or scaffolding/access sectors, with demonstrated transition into a business development capacity.
• Experience contributing to or leading tender submissions.
