About the role
If you've run a fabric welder, you already know most of this job
We're building out a dedicated mesh production line at our Carrum Downs factory, and we need someone to own it. If you've welded zips and keders onto screen fabric before, you'll be up to speed in a week. If you haven't but you're accurate, careful and good with your hands, we'll teach you.
🏢 About Freedom Retractable Screens
We're an industry leader in retrofit retractable screens, with over 70 years of combined experience customising and installing doors and screens across greater Melbourne and Victoria. Our products are Australian-made and defined by style, quality and intelligent innovation.
Our factory is in Carrum Downs. We've grown every year for the past ten, we have more work in the pipeline than we've ever had, and we're now bringing more screen manufacturing in-house — which is exactly why this role exists.
🔧 About the Role
Mesh is the part of a retractable screen the customer looks at and touches every single day. Every screen we build is custom, so every piece of mesh is cut and finished to one specific opening. There's no run of a thousand identical parts — it's one job at a time, done right.
You'll work off the job sheet, cut the mesh to size, weld the keder, zips and splines on our Ultracut Duoweld impulse welder, check it, and hand it to assembly knowing it's correct. If it isn't right, it doesn't leave your bench.
🧩 What you'll do
Work from job sheets — read the measurements, plan the cut, check before you cut
Cut mesh to size from the roll of fibreglass insect mesh or blind material
Set up and run the Ultracut Duoweld impulse welder — select weld width, set the right parameters for the fabric, position and weld keder, zips and splines
Check every piece before it moves on — square, straight, clean consistent weld, no holes, no creasing
Match each piece to its job and order number, label it and stage it for assembly
Basic care of the machine, and telling us early when something's not right, whether it's the fabric, the machine or the job sheet
Operating various other machines and equipment used in the manufacturing processes
Assisting with the loading and unloading of raw materials, parts, and finished products
Maintaining a clean and organised work environment
Collaborating with team members to identify and implement process improvements
Completing all necessary documentation and record-keeping related to production activities
Assist with day-to-day logistics tasks
👐 You might be coming from
You don't need retractable screen experience. If you've done any of these, the skill transfers:
Outdoor and café blinds, privacy screens, awnings — this is very close to the same job
PVC and vinyl fabrication — marquees, tarps, covers, liners, truck curtains, pool covers
Signage and large-format print finishing — banner hems, pole pockets, welded seams
Marine trimming, boat covers and biminis
CNC fabric cutting — Vectrocut, Matic or similar
Industrial sewing, canvas or upholstery — the joining method is different, but the measuring, cutting and material handling all carry across
🧠 What You’ll Bring
Accurate measuring and cutting — you work to the millimetre, and you check twice
Confidence with an impulse, hot-air, hot-wedge or RF fabric welder, or the willingness to learn one properly
Genuine attention to detail, and the honesty to flag your own mistakes
Ability to work on your own once you know the job, and as part of a small team
Comfortable reading job sheets and measurements in English
Reliable transport to Carrum Downs — we're in an industrial estate, so it's easier with a car
🎓 Skills & Experience
Hands-on time with a Duoweld or any other impulse or hot-air fabric welder
Experience welding keder, zips or spline onto screen fabric
Forklift licence
Experience in a custom or make-to-order environment where no two jobs are the same
🌟 What You’ll Love
Full-time or casual — tell us which suits you
Monday to Friday, 8am - 4pm — no shift work, no weekends
Regular overtime available for anyone who wants it
Paid, hands-on training on the Duoweld and on our product
You'd own the mesh line rather than being one pair of hands on a bench
A small, tight team where the work you do is visible and it matters
“You only get out what you put in” – at Freedom Screens Victoria, effort never goes unnoticed.
