About the role
AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role
You are a commercially minded senior lawyer with deep expertise navigating complex regulatory frameworks and delivering pragmatic legal advice in dynamic, high-stakes environments. You thrive in situations where the law, policy and commercial outcomes intersect, and are energised by helping organisations respond to change, manage risk and seize opportunities.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of Australia's energy sector, advising on complex regulatory matters that support the operation, security and transformation of the National Electricity Market.
What you will be doing
Provide strategic legal advice on complex energy regulatory, operational and corporate matters, helping AEMO navigate risk and meet its obligations in a rapidly evolving market.
Lead legal support for regulatory reform and market development initiatives, shaping the future of Australia's energy sector.
Advise on the procurement of critical system services, including the drafting and negotiation of complex commercial agreements that support power system reliability and security.
Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders across the business, building strong relationships and influencing key decisions.
Represent AEMO with government, market bodies and external advisors, while managing legal projects and external counsel to deliver high-quality, value-driven outcomes.
What you will bring to the role
Significant experience advising on energy regulation (electricity and/or gas), or transferable expertise gained in another highly regulated industry.
A strong understanding of complex legislative and regulatory frameworks, with the ability to translate technical legal issues into clear, practical advice.
A proactive, solutions-focused approach, with the confidence to provide real-time guidance and partner closely with stakeholders to navigate challenges and make informed decisions.
Strong commercial judgement, sound decision-making skills and the ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
Given this is a senior appointment you will be at least 5 years PQE and be eligible to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction.
In return some of our benefits to you
Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
