Our Role

Kingswood College is seeking an experienced and compassionate Counsellor to join our student wellbeing team and provide responsive counselling support to students from Kindergarten to Year 12 on an as needs basis.

This role is designed to complement the work of our permanent Counselling and Wellbeing Team, providing additional professional counselling capacity when required. Within this capacity you will focus on responsive, short-term support rather than carrying an ongoing therapeutic caseload.

This position is particularly suited to an early career counsellor seeking to develop experience within a supportive school community or an experienced practitioner looking for a flexible counselling role. 

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy Principal, you will work collaboratively with the College’s Counselling team and other staff involved in supporting student wellbeing.

Your responsibilities would be to:

• Provide short-term, interim counselling support to students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
• Conduct initial assessment and brief intervention, including suicidal ideation and self-harm risk assessment and safety planning where required.
• Utilise evidence-based therapeutic approaches with trauma-informed and neuro-affirming frameworks.  
• Support students experiencing emotional distress, interpersonal difficulties and school-related challenges.
• Provide support during crises or critical incidents and contribute professional advice to relevant College leaders.
• Ensure clear and timely handover to the College’s permanent counselling team and recognising when further support through referral to external health professionals is required.
• Work collaboratively with College staff families and external health professionals to support continuity of care.
• Maintaining accurate, timely and confidential student records.
• Meet professional, ethical, confidentiality, mandatory reporting, risk management and child-safety requirements  

About You

You are a qualified counselling or mental health professional who is confident working with children and young people, and able to quickly establish trust and rapport. You have strong understanding of the responsibilities that come with supporting students in a school environment and can balance compassionate, student-centred practice with sound professional judgement and effective communication.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

• Current professional registration or accreditation as a Counsellor, Psychologist Mental Health Nurse or Mental Health Accredited Social Worker, for example through AHPRA, AASW, PACFA or ACA.
• The ability to establish positive rapport with students across the K-12 age range.
• Knowledge and demonstrated capability in suicide and self-harm risk assessment and safety planning, including ASIST certification.
• Knowledge and capability in family violence and child safety practice, including MARAM certification.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail, sound professional judgement and effective record-management skills.
• A strong personal and professional commitment to child safety and child-safe practice.
• A current Working with Children Check and Police Check
• Current First Aid and CPR, Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies, and First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis training [or willingness to obtain].  

Previous experience supporting children or young people and relevant postgraduate qualifications will be highly regarded.
