The Consult Liaison Nurse provides an interface between mental and physical health; informed by prior extensive experience in mental health community, child and youth and inpatient settings, the clinician will undertake assessments, provide support, advice and recommendations appropriate to mental health care to other staff, clients and family members in general and paediatric wards of the hospital. The role requires a strong cultural safety framework, a commitment to evidence-based practice and experience working autonomously.

Alice Springs Hospital teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on indigenous and remote health as a result of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities. Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.  

An opportunity exists for a Nurse with Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs, Central Australia Region working as the interface between mental and physical health. The Consultation Liaison Nurse offers advice, support, education and psychiatric consultation and care to both adult and child and youth clients, and clinical staff across the general and paediatric wards of Alice Springs Hospital (ASH).

The Team works in collaboration with the other Teams within the Mental Health Service and other Central Australia Region health teams, such as Child and Youth, alcohol and other drugs and the psychogeriatric service, to recommend a comprehensive mental health service tailored to individual needs. The Team collaboratively develops and implements innovative education to Central Australia Region health teams and Alice Springs Hospital staff using a range of appropriate audit and evidence-based approaches to enhance the quality of service.
