Payroll Team Leader

We're seeking an experienced and people-focused Payroll Team Leader to lead a team of payroll professionals and oversee the accurate and compliant delivery of high-volume payroll services.

About the Role

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, you will lead a team of 8 Payroll Officers and oversee the end-to-end processing of weekly and fortnightly payrolls for more than 15,000 employees and labour hire personnel.

You will be responsible for ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, service excellence, and continuous improvement while building a positive, high-performing team culture.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, mentor and develop a team of 8 Payroll Officers.

• Manage team workloads and payroll schedules to ensure payrolls are processed accurately and on time.

• Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for 15,000+ employees across multiple business operations.

• Review and approve complex payroll transactions, including overpayments and adjustments.

• Act as the escalation point for complex payroll enquiries and issues.

• Ensure employee payroll records and documentation are maintained accurately and compliantly.

• Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency, compliance and service delivery.

• Support payroll system upgrades, testing, implementations and optimisation activities.

• Develop and maintain payroll procedures, documentation and work instructions.

• Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, training and performance management activities.

• Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and exceptional customer service.

• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, SOX requirements and company policies.

About You

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

• Proven experience leading or supervising a payroll team.

• Extensive end-to-end payroll experience within a high-volume environment.

• Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, compliance requirements and payroll best practice.

• Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

• Experience managing payroll escalations and complex payroll matters.

• Strong stakeholder engagement and customer service skills.

• The ability to prioritise, organise and manage competing deadlines.

• A continuous improvement mindset and desire to drive efficiencies.

Desirable Experience

• SAP Payroll experience.

• SAP SuccessFactors experience.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

• Experience leading payroll operations within a large, multi-site organisation.
