About the role
If you’re an Emergency RN looking for a role where nurses genuinely lead care, your scope can grow, and the facility has been designed by the people who use it every day — Cowra ED deserves your attention.
This is a newly built, clinician-designed Emergency Department with modern treatment spaces, strong visibility, improved privacy and practical flow from ambulance arrival through to reception, nurse assessment and clinical care.
It is a rural ED with real activity, strong multidisciplinary support and more room to build your clinical range.
Cowra ED has a strong nurse-led model. Nurses are central to initial assessment, patient flow and care coordination, with opportunities to work to broader scope through dedicated pathways including ECAT protocols.
You’ll be supported by a transitional Nurse Practitioner, experienced senior Registered Nurses and a Nurse Unit Manager — a level of nursing leadership not always seen in a regional ED of this size.
The clinical support around you is just as strong:
Doctor in the department at all times
Anaesthetist on call
Newly opened Medical Imaging Department
CT, MRI and ultrasound access
Six monitored beds with back-to-base monitoring
New resuscitation equipment
ECG technology with cloud-based access to results
This is emergency nursing with autonomy and challenge, but with the clinical backup to keep extending your practice confidently.
With 9,223 emergency presentations in 2025, Cowra ED gives you the patient mix and activity to keep developing your emergency nursing capability.
The department includes acute treatment spaces, an isolation space, safe assessment space, consultation room and nurse assessment room, all designed around contemporary emergency care.
You’ll work in a setting where your judgement matters, your contribution is visible and nurses are central to how the department operates.
Cowra also gives nurses room to broaden their experience beyond ED.
Nurses are often offered the opportunity to work across at least two specialties, with potential exposure to:
Renal
Perioperative
General wards
Community and district nursing
Outpatients
Chemotherapy
Rural midwifery pathways
Cowra also offers an annual rural midwifery scholarship opportunity for staff working at, or committed to, Cowra.
If you want to keep emergency nursing as your base while building wider rural capability, Cowra gives you genuine career room.
Cowra ED has a close, collaborative and multicultural nursing team, with nurses from different cultures bringing valued perspectives and skills to the workplace.
This is a community-based hospital in the truest sense. The people you work with also live locally, and the care you provide has a visible impact in the town around you.
In the bush, community is not just a lifestyle word — it is the safety net. People know each other, doors are open and the work you do is seen and valued.
Cowra offers an affordable regional lifestyle with strong community connection and plenty to enjoy outside work.
Families have access to public and Catholic schools, sport, dance, music, drama, horse riding and swimming. Wyangala Dam offers fishing and water sports, while nearby national parks provide access to four-wheel driving, bushwalking and camping.
Cowra is also known for the Festival of International Understanding and its unique connection with Japan through the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cherry Blossom Festival.
Orange and Bathurst are around an hour away, Canberra is around two hours away, and the median house price is around $467,500.
It is the kind of town where you can build an ED career, find your people and still have time and space for life outside work.
The Welcome Experience is a free NSW Government service helping eligible essential workers and their families settle into regional NSW.
Local Connectors can assist with housing, schools, partner employment and community connections.
If you want emergency nursing with expanded scope, nurse-led care, modern facilities, strong clinical support and the opportunity to become part of a connected regional community — Cowra ED is ready to welcome you.
