About the role
Legal AI Lead | Melbourne
For the lawyer who'd rather build the tool than write the memo about it
Most lawyers who get excited about technology end up presenting on it instead of building with it. This role is the opposite. It's a hands-on, in-house role for a lawyer who's exceptional at technology and wants their hands on the tools every day, not a seat at the strategy table.
About the role
We are a premier Australian commercial law firm, trusted by some of the country's most significant corporations, high-net-worth individuals and family businesses on their most important legal matters. We're known equally for the calibre of our advice and the strength of our relationships, with a close, collegiate culture that's endured as our reputation has grown. We invest seriously in AI tools like Harvey and ChatGPT to enhance the quality, efficiency and value of our legal services, guided by a simple principle: technology should handle the routine, process-driven work, freeing lawyers for the complex, strategic advisory work clients actually engage us for. Technology is adopted thoughtfully, with proper regard for confidentiality, professional responsibility and quality.
This is a hands-on, technical, individual-contributor role, where you're inside the tools every day making them work. Reporting to our Chief Information Officer, you'll build, configure and embed the AI tools our lawyers rely on day to day, becoming our go-to in-house AI expert: the person partners, lawyers and support staff turn to because you understand both how legal work gets done and how to build something that makes it better.
Key responsibilities
• Drive the uptake of AI tools, including Harvey, ChatGPT, Zoom AI Companion and emerging platforms, across our legal practice areas and support departments, with a tailored adoption strategy for each
• Partner with lawyers and support staff to spot the workflow opportunities where AI can deliver meaningful improvements to legal work product, efficiency and client service
• Guide fee earners and support staff in effective prompt engineering techniques and in deploying AI agents to enhance legal work
• Support staff in getting the most out of collaborative AI features, including vaults, shared project spaces and other tools that let teams work together using AI
• Design and deliver training programs and change management initiatives that embed new ways of working across our firm
• Act as our internal point of expertise on AI tools, giving day-to-day advice and troubleshooting support to users
• Monitor developments in legal AI, evaluate new tools and features, and identify opportunities to further build our AI capabilities over time
• Work closely with our Technology, HR, Knowledge and Risk functions to keep AI use consistent with policy, professional obligations and quality standards
About you
• A qualified lawyer, or someone with deep legal training, who is genuinely exceptional with technology
• Demonstrated, hands-on experience with AI tools and prompt engineering, such as Harvey, ChatGPT or comparable enterprise platforms. You've actually built something with them
• A strong understanding of how legal practice operates and how lawyers work day-to-day
• A builder's mindset: you'd rather be inside the tool making it work than presenting a strategy about it in a meeting
• The ability to translate technical concepts clearly for non-technical audiences, from senior partners through to support staff
• Sound judgement in relation to confidentiality, professional obligations and responsible use of AI
• A genuine preference for hands-on, individual-contributor work over people leadership
• A continuous improvement mindset and genuine interest in developments in legal AI
If you've trained as a lawyer but light up more around a technical problem than a legal one, this is a rare seat: hands-on, backed by real investment, inside a firm with the appetite to match.
