Male Disability Support Worker – Central Coast

Buddy Support Services is looking for a few good blokes to join our team on the Central Coast.

We’re specifically looking for male support workers due to the needs and preferences of the clients these roles will be supporting.

Now, before we go any further, there’s one thing we need to make VERY clear.

Reliability is a must.

Not a “nice to have”. Not a “most of the time”. It’s a must.

Our clients rely on us, which means we need to be able to rely on you.

If you’re someone who regularly calls in sick, has a new emergency every second week, sleeps through alarms or suddenly remembers you’ve got something else on 30 minutes before your shift, this probably isn’t the job for you.

Life happens. We get it.

But if life seems to happen every time you’re rostered for work, we’re probably not going to be a great match.

If you want regular, consistent shifts from us, we expect regular, consistent reliability from you.

Fair trade.

Now, what’s the actual job?

We’re not looking for someone who wants to sit on the lounge, play on their phone and call it support work.

We want someone who will actually get involved.

Go to the gym. Kick a footy around. Go fishing. Help cook dinner. Teach someone how to shop or budget. Help around the house. Get out into the community. Have a laugh. Build some actual life skills.

Basically, do the job you’re being paid to do.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need to be the world’s most experienced support worker.

Sometimes the best people we find come from completely different backgrounds.

What matters to us is that you’ve got common sense, can talk to people, aren’t scared of getting involved and understand that support work is about helping someone become more independent.

You need to be able to have some banter and build a good relationship with clients without forgetting that you’re still the support worker.

You’ll need to set boundaries when needed, follow behaviour support strategies, take direction and stay calm when things don’t go exactly to plan.

And yes, you’ll need to write decent shift notes.

“Had a good day” isn’t a shift note.

Tell us what you actually did, what skills you worked on and how the shift went.

What you'll be doing

Every client is different, so every shift can be different.

One day you might be at the gym, another day fishing, cooking, shopping, working around the house, going to an appointment or helping someone learn a new skill.

Some clients need support with everyday living skills.

Some need community access.

Some need mentoring or behaviour support.

Some simply need a good male role model who can build rapport, have a laugh and help them work towards their goals.

The big thing for us is that you’re doing things WITH the client, not doing everything FOR them.

If they can learn to do it themselves, that’s the goal.

The boring but necessary stuff

You’ll need:

• NDIS Worker Screening Check
• Working With Children Check where required
• First Aid and CPR
• Australian driver’s licence
• A reliable car
• Comprehensive insurance if transporting clients
• Australian working rights
• A phone and the ability to use an app without ringing the office every time you forget your password

Experience in disability support, youth work, mental health, trades, sport, coaching, mentoring or community services is great.

But a fancy resume won't make up for being unreliable.

We can teach you plenty of things.

We can’t teach you to turn up to work.

What you’ll get from us

Do a good job, look after the clients, communicate with us and be reliable, and we’ll do our best to give you consistent work.

We have weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts available across the Central Coast.

There’s training, support from management and opportunities to pick up regular ongoing shifts.

We’re not interested in building a team of robots either.

Have a personality. Have a laugh. Bring some energy to the shift.

Just know when it’s time to get the job done.
