Environmental/Heritage Trainer Assessor

About the Opportunity

On Country Academy is looking for Certificate IV TAE-qualified environmental or heritage professionals to join our team on a casual basis and deliver practical, hands-on training with Ranger groups and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across regional and remote Australia.

Our programs are delivered across Australia, with our training footprint continuing to grow. Trainers will travel to a range of regional and remote locations, from areas such as the Pilbara, Kimberly, and Goldfields in Western Australia through to regional communities in South Australia and Queensland.

We are particularly keen to hear from people with qualifications or industry experience across Conservation & Ecosystem Management, Environmental Science, Land Management, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Ranger Programs, Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Heritage Management, Indigenous Heritage, Heritage Consulting, Cultural Site Management or related fields who also hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE).

We are looking for people with the skills and experience who have the required competencies to deliver training in units of competency that can include some of the following: weed control, sampling and testing water, collecting native seed, recognising flora and fauna, conducting cultural ecological site inspections, protecting places of cultural significance, and planned burning.

This isn't your typical classroom-based trainer role. The outdoors is our classroom. Our training is delivered on Country, working with small groups and embedding learning and assessment into practical environmental, land and cultural management activities. Each program is supported by an Elder to provide traditional knowledge and manage cultural protocols. 

About Us

On Country Academy is an RTO delivering nationally recognised training. We deliver high-quality training to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the delivery of Ranger programs on their Country. Our programs support the development of Healthy Country Plans developed by the Traditional Owners to preserve the environment, culture, and knowledge transfer.

Our training is practical and hands-on, embedding learning and assessment into real environmental, land and cultural management activities rather than relying on traditional classroom-based delivery.

On Country Academy has at the core of its mission to build the capacity of our partner organisations, and also aims to ensure there are quality employment outcomes for our students. We use 2 way learning and engage Elders in the training to combine Western scientific and traditional knowledge in the programs. 

 Key Responsibilities: 

• Delivery & Facilitation: Deliver engaging, hands-on training sessions (usually in a regional area) in accordance with the training package/curriculum. This will use the OCA learning materials and guides, assessment materials. This is always delivered on Country using practical activities.  

• Assessment: Conduct competence assessments, marking, and feedback to ensure compliance with standards (e.g., RTO requirements), whilst using a variety of assessment strategies to align with learner needs 

• Student Support: Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for diverse learners. 

• Administration & Compliance: Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation regarding attendance, assessment, and learner progress. 

• Continuous Improvement: Participate in trainer meetings, moderation/validation processes, and professional development. 

• Industry Currency: Maintain up-to-date knowledge and practical skills within the relevant industry. 

• Course Development – participate in course development and review of course materials 

Essential Requirements: 

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE)

• A relevant qualification and/or industry experience in environmental science, conservation, land management, natural resource management, ecology, Ranger programs, archaeology, anthropology, cultural heritage or a related field

• Experience or a capacity to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

• Willing to work in a FIFO arrangement in regional and remote areas to deliver training in blocks of approximately 5 to 12 days at a time

• An interest in taking practical knowledge and experience into a hands-on training environment

• An interest in delivering training across Cultural Site Works, On Country Management and Conservation and Ecosystem Management.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for clear instruction and feedback. 

• Availability to work flexible hours based on the needs of the organisation, which sometimes include evenings and weekends. 

• Sound understanding of relevant regulations (e.g., ASQA requirements; cultural protocols). 

• Confident and proficient using technology, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Microsoft Office Suite, and other digital systems that may be used for training and assessment.

• A willingness to learn, contribute and be part of a practical, supportive and culturally respectful training environment.
