Tauondi Aboriginal College is seeking an Aboriginal Community Educator – Correctional Pathways to support the delivery of culturally responsive learning and pathway programs for Aboriginal people engaged with correctional services, prisons and pre-release environments.

Tauondi Aboriginal College is an independent, Aboriginal community-controlled Registered Training Organisation established in 1973. For more than 50 years, Tauondi has supported Aboriginal people through education, training, learner support, employment pathways and community-based programs. Our approach places Aboriginal culture, identity and community at the centre of learning and support. 

The position will primarily support the Living Skills and Pathway Program, delivering structured, non-accredited learning activities designed to strengthen practical life skills, confidence, communication, self-management and readiness for future education, training, employment and community transition. 

About the role

Working with Aboriginal participants in correctional and pre-release environments, you will facilitate culturally safe and engaging learning activities that support participants to build confidence, identify personal goals and explore realistic pathways after release.

The role combines community education, facilitation, mentoring, pathway support and program coordination. You will work closely with the Department for Correctional Services, the Aboriginal Services Directorate, Tauondi teams and other community, education, training and employment stakeholders. 

Key responsibilities include:

• delivering culturally responsive Living Skills and Pathway Program sessions within correctional and pre-release settings;
• facilitating learning in communication, confidence, motivation, self-management, goal setting, workplace readiness and positive decision-making;
• supporting participants to identify education, training and employment opportunities;
• building respectful and culturally safe relationships with Aboriginal participants;
• providing encouragement, mentoring and pathway-focused support;
• coordinating program schedules, resources and operational arrangements with correctional services;
• contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of program resources and activities;
• maintaining relationships with DCS, community organisations, training providers, employers and other pathway partners; and
• maintaining accurate participant, program and outcome records and contributing to reporting and evaluation activities. 

About you

We are looking for someone who can communicate and engage effectively with Aboriginal participants and create culturally safe learning environments that encourage participation, confidence and positive change.

You will ideally bring experience in:

• delivering non-accredited training, workshops or group learning activities;
• working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people using culturally appropriate approaches;
• participant engagement, mentoring or pathway-focused support;
• coordinating programs or services involving government and community stakeholders; and
• community services or a related environment. 

Strong interpersonal skills, sound organisation and administration skills, flexibility, initiative and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively will be important in this role.

Essential requirements

Applicants must hold, or be prepared to obtain where applicable:

• Certificate IV or higher qualification in Community Services, Youth Work, Social Work or a related field
• DHS Working with Children Check
• National Police Clearance
• Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care training
• Current driver's licence. 

Experience or qualifications in adult education, foundation skills or non-accredited training delivery will be highly regarded.
