Project Officer, Event Technology

About the Team

The Delivery and Support Branch leads the preparation and delivery of services for the AEC. The Branch is responsible for planning future electoral events, developing and delivering key electoral capabilities and services, and managing the delivery of electoral events in line with election timetables. The Branch also manages contracts and agreements with third-party suppliers which are critical for the successful delivery of electoral events.

The Polling Place Technology team sits within the Event Technology Section. The Section manages and delivers the use of technology in polling place operations and processes to support timely and accurate election delivery and outcomes. This includes:

• Senate systems and the Senate count.
• Polling Place Technology, including the management and deployment of Electronic Certified Lists (ECLs) and digital Officer in Charge (OIC) returns.
• Scanning and reconciliation of paper certified lists.

The Opportunity

The AEC is seeking a Project Officer until 30 June 2027 to support the administration and coordination of activities relating to Polling Place Technology. The role includes participating in section planning for short-term tasks and work area planning for longer-term initiatives.

The Polling Place Technology team supports the deployment of approximately 15,000 laptops and 12,000 printers during a federal election. Polling Place Technology includes Electronic Certified Lists (ECLs) and digital Officer in Charge (OIC) returns. An ECL is an electronic version of the paper certified list of voters, allowing polling officials to search and electronically record that an elector has been handed a ballot paper in accordance with relevant legislation. The digital OIC return supports OICs to effectively manage their polling place, replacing traditional paper forms with bespoke software that improves efficiency and provides real-time information and reporting to AEC National Office.

The successful candidate will undertake work that is moderately complex to complex in nature and under limited direction, to contribute to the delivery of projects throughout the election cycle and across the Branch.

Desirable

• Experience contributing to the planning, coordination, delivery or evaluation of large-scale projects or events.
• Previous contract management experience, including monitoring deliverables, resolving issues and maintaining an understanding of contract obligations and service requirements.
• Understanding of SharePoint administration, content management or information governance principles.
• Knowledge of Australian electoral law and practice, or the ability to quickly gain this knowledge.
