About the role
The Opportunity
Ports Victoria is seeking suitably qualified people to join our team as casual Transport Safety Officers, based at either Williamstown or Queenscliff.
About us
Ports Victoria is the state's port regulator and independent maritime advisor to government. We coordinate vessel traffic for nearly 10,000 commercial ship movements annually, set standards for safe navigation through Victoria's commercial port waters, and manage the channels that connect the state to the world.
The system we regulate underpins Victoria's economy. More than 98 per cent of the state's international trade moves by sea, supporting over 88,000 jobs and $111 billion in annual trade value. Melbourne's container trade is projected to more than double by 2055. We provide government with the independent, long-term advice needed to plan for that future. Ports Victoria is an equal opportunities employer and embraces the benefits that diversity in our workplace brings.
How you'll make an impact
Are you looking for a role where you can work outdoors and on the water, educate waterway users about the risks associated with shipping and small vessel interactions, and help improve safety in port waters? If so, this could be the opportunity for you.
Due to increased operational requirements, Ports Victoria is seeking highly motivated Transport Safety Officers to support on-water safety education and compliance activities across the port waters of Melbourne, Geelong and Hastings.
About you
You will be available to work weekdays, weekends and public holidays during the summer period, which runs from September to April.
You will ideally bring qualifications or experience in a broad-based discipline with a strong focus on communication strategies, educational messaging and compliance functions involving members of the public.
A Certificate IV in Government (Statutory Compliance) or Investigations is mandatory for this position.
An AMSA qualification, such as General Purpose Hand, Coxswain or Master <24, is highly desirable.
Successful applicants must hold a current full Victorian driver licence and be able to obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC). You will also need a basic knowledge of the Marine Safety Act 2010 (Vic) and supporting regulations.
You will be paid the base hours as advertised plus applicable loadings and allowances provided for in the Ports Victoria Enterprise Agreement 2023.
To request a copy of the position description or to find out more, please contact Colin Morris, Port Safety Coordinator, on (03) 9644 9745 or email portsafety@ports.vic.gov.au.
Applications close 25 August 2026.
Applications may close earlier if suitable candidates are identified. Only Shortlisted candidates will be contacted directly.
Please note: the advertised Transport Safety Officer role located in Queenscliff/Bellarine is the same position.
Employment with Ports Victoria is subject to satisfactory background checks, including professional references and a character check.
Ports Victoria welcomes applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. We focus on the essential requirements of the role and are committed to treating all applicants consistently and fairly.
