About the role
About the Role
Our Quality and Food Safety Manager is heading out on parental leave, and we need an experienced quality leader to hold the function for twelve months. This is not a caretaker brief. You will be the site's primary SQF Practitioner and GFCO primary contact, you will lead the quality team, and you will own the audit outcomes our customers and certification bodies judge us on.
Majans runs a single manufacturing site at Sumner in Brisbane — fryers, extrusion, seasoning, packing and warehousing — producing Bhuja and Infuzions for the major retailers, the independent channel and export markets. Quality is not a support function here. Our SQF and GFCO certifications are what let us sell where we sell, and the person in this chair is the one who protects them.
You will lead a team of two direct and three indirect reports, and work across production, procurement, R&D, warehouse and commercial. You will sit in the Ops cycle at T2 and T3 and be expected to bring a view, not just a report. A structured handover with our current Quality and Food Safety Manager is built into the start of the contract.
Twelve months is long enough to leave the systems better than you found them. That is the expectation, not a stretch goal.
What You'll Own
Certification and audit
- Act as the site's primary SQF Practitioner, holding compliance and certification to SQF (latest edition), GFCO gluten-free and Non-GMO.
- Own the gluten program as GFCO primary contact.
- Host and lead external, certification and customer audits — and drive the site toward a good-to-excellent SQF rating.
The quality management system
- Lead, maintain and continuously improve our HACCP-based quality and food safety management system.
- Own the core processes: incident management, QC, customer complaints, verification programs, internal audits, business continuity and non-conformance management.
- Make sure raw materials, in-process product and finished goods meet specification — and that the testing behind that claim is sound.
Non-conformance and root cause
- Run the internal audit program, find the gaps, and close them.
- Drive genuine root-cause analysis with internal stakeholders and suppliers so issues do not recur — with 100% closure of non-conformances within a month of being raised.
- Troubleshoot live quality problems on the floor and facilitate the problem solving.
Team and culture
- Lead, coach and develop the quality team, and prioritise its workload against real production pressure.
- Be the driver of quality and food safety culture across the whole business, not just your own function.
The wider business
- Bring quality and food safety expertise to new product development and to project work.
- Represent quality in the S&OP cycle (T2, T3) and follow through on what you commit to.
- Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives that show up in the numbers.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Degree in Food Technology, Food Science or a related discipline.
- 5+ years in quality and food safety within food manufacturing, including leading a team.
- Current SQF Practitioner status and current HACCP certification. This role is the site's designated practitioner from day one and an audit will fall inside the contract term, so this is a hard requirement rather than something to develop in the role.
- Strong working knowledge of SQF requirements, HACCP principles, allergen management, and food safety and quality hazards.
- Proven internal auditing and root-cause / problem-solving capability.
- Familiarity with lab equipment and product testing.
- The communication skills to influence from the factory floor to suppliers, customers and certification bodies — and the judgement and confidence to hold the line on standards under time, resource and cost pressure.
- Available to commit to a 12-month fixed-term contract, with full working rights in Australia.
Nice to Have
- Gluten-free program experience, particularly GFCO, or Non-GMO scheme experience.
- Snack, extrusion or fried-product manufacturing background.
- Lead auditor qualification.
- Experience in a single-site business where the quality lead is the most senior technical voice in the room.
Why This Role Is Different
Most twelve-month contracts are holding patterns. This one is not. You are the senior quality and food safety voice for the whole site from the day the handover ends — there is no technical layer above you to defer to, and no committee to hide behind. If you have been the deputy waiting for the seat, this is the seat.
You will also get a genuinely broad canvas for a single site: certification across three schemes, a team to develop, a place in the Operations cycle, and direct access to the people who make the decisions. Majans is family-owned and Brisbane-based, so the distance between spotting a problem and fixing it is short.
We are clear-eyed about the fixed term. It is a real twelve months, with a genuine handover at both ends, and the scope is not reduced because the contract has an end date.
About Majans
Majans is a proudly Australian, family-owned snack food manufacturer and the home of the iconic Bhuja and Infuzions brands. We have been making snacks in Brisbane since 1984, and today we supply the major retailers, the independent channel and export markets from our manufacturing facility at Sumner. Our site is certified to SQF and GFCO gluten-free standards, and we intend to lead our category on quality and food safety practice, not just meet the standard.
Applicants must have full working rights in Australia. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
